Kicking off: Brentwood quarterback Alex Corporan shook off a hard hit to his right thigh to engineer a 29-28 victory over Longwood yesterday in a Section 11 football opener.
Brentwood built a 22-0 lead before Longwood responded with three fourth-quarter touchdowns to force overtime. Corporan, who returned in the final minute of regulation following the injury, then hit Christopher Jean Pierre on a 10-yard fade on the first play of overtime, and Estaban Arp kicked the extra point.
Longwood responded with a TD of its own, but the extra-point kick failed.
"Coach told me that playmakers make plays," Corporan told Newsday after going 16-for-29 for 220 yards and two TDs. "I did what I had to do. It was a fade to the left and 'T.O.' did what he had to do."
Jean Pierre caught seven passes for 128 yards in the victory. Longwood backup QB Eric Lee had rallied his team in the second half and finished 11-for-19 for 217 yards.
First down: Watertown did not share Brentwood's good fortune in the QB resiliency department in a 20-17 loss in which Carthage drove 63 yards to Patrick Gibbons' 1-yard TD run with 1:44 to go.
Watertown lost both its starting quarterback, junior Tyler Augliano, and his backup, senior Sean Scordo, to injuries. Coach Vince Williams had to resort to senior tight end Adam McNulty taking all the snaps in the second half.
Augliano drove Watertown 80 yards in 12 plays for a lead that grew to 14-0 early in the second quarter, but he exited with a collarbone injury late in first quarter.
"I really thought we had something special going with Tyler," Williams told The Daily Times. "When Sean went down, we asked Adam if he could play (quarterback) and he said yes."
Scordo, a two-way player, suffered an ankle injury defending a pass play just before the half.
Second down: The 2007 state champ (Walton) now resides in Class C. The 2008 state champ (Maple Grove) is 1-1 and hasn't been able to get its offense untracked.
Dundee seems to be telling the New York football community its ready to represent the left end of the state in Class D at the Carrier Dome in Novermber. The Scots rolled up 308 yards on the ground and 101 through the air in just 29 snaps to rout Mynderse 70-8.
Senior Steven Webb carried nine times for 194 yards in the first half and scored TDs on runs covering 9, 4, 48, 20 and 61 yards. QB Thomas Pratt III was 4-for-4 with and two scoring strikes, and Ryan Ballard scored on a rush, a reception and an 85-yard kickoff return.
Dundee, which opened with a 71-0 rout of Geneva DeSales last week, dropped a 57-12 decision to Maple Grove in the 2008 New York State Public High School Athletic Association quarterfinals.
Third down: Aquinas, which has subscribed to a six-yards-and-a-cloud-of-FieldTurf approach to offense for the past several seasons, served noticed that it has just the man to start putting the ball in air.
Manny Magliocco threw two touchdown passes to Chris Bostick (brother of '08 QB Ben Bostick) and finished 11-for-14 for 155 yards in a 33-7 home victory vs. Union-Endicott.
"When we lost to Sweet Home last year (in the state quarterfinals) we realized that we’ve got to get people off us," Aquinas coach Chris Battaglia told the Democrat and Chronicle.
Oh, Mike Messina still rolled up 151 yards in 24 carries (plus a highlight-reel punt return in the fourth quarter), but Magliocco was throwing to Bostick and Anthony Bianchi as Plan A rather than an afterthought.
Magliocco's father was the Aquinas QB 30 years ago, and brother Mark Jr. was the New York State Sportswriters Association Class A player of the year after leading the Little Irish to the 2001 state championship.
By the way, U-E received a scare in the third quarter as Rutgers recruit Jordan Thomas limped off the field after an awkward slip and fall while returning a kick. It was diagnosed as a cramp, and he returned to action in the
