Leading off today: The Skaneateles school board voted 4-3 Tuesday to approves former Syracuse University star and NFL player Tim Green as the school's next football coach.
The board was sharply split between Green and former Lakers football coach Ron Doctor, The Post-Standard reported. Doctor is the Skaneateles lacrosse coach.
"I'm very excited," Green told the paper. "My objective is to build the program, turn it into a championship program ... and create something that can perpetuate itself."
Green was an All-American at Syracuse and went on to a career with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. He's since done work as a TV analyst and become a best-selling author, and Green's name has been mentioned from time to time as a potential candidate for political office.
The paper also reported Joe Fiacchi apparently is the new coach at Marcellus, replacing Joe Goss, who resigned. That move is pending approval by the Marcellus school board.
New coach at Lourdes: John Jay football coach Brian Walsh has left to take over the program at Our Lady of Lourdes in Poughkeepsie, Hudson Valley Sports Report reported.
Walsh was 166-79-6 record from 1979-2005 at Brewster, losing state finals at the Carrier Dome to Lackawanna 14-7 in 1997 and to Canandaigua 17-14 in 1999. He coached five seasons at John Jay, going 30-13.
"In talking to the people from Lourdes, they’re pretty committed to improving their football program," Walsh said. "They have some plans for the program that were attractive to me and I want to be part of that."
College developments: Tottenville senior tailback Marvin Staten has committed to play football at the University of Akron after visiting the campus over the weekend, The Advance reported.
He is part of the first recruiting class for coach Rob Ianello, an assistant at Notre Dame for the last five seasons and raises the total to 23 New York seniors having committed to Division I-A colleges thus far.
"They're looking for a big tailback and he fit the bill," Tottenville coach Jim Munson told the paper. "It's a great fit. That's a good level for him to play at, especially at tailback. They envision him being 215 pounds, which is doable because he's 200 pounds now. They want to run the I-formation and he's a great downhill runner."
Staten ran for 1,242 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior, averaging 6.9 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, don't expect a big disruption at Rutgers despite reports Joe Susan, the recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach, will be named coach at Bucknell tonight. Susan is a former Bucknell assistant.
The Rutgers recruiting class appears to be more or less locked up for the year, with the usual last-minute additions or subtractions to come. The Scarlet Knights have at least 15 commitments thus far, including Riverhead linebacker
