Monday, Jan. 3, 2011: Pairings announced for Union-Endicott Duals
Leading off today: John Glenn and Spencerport could be headed to a championship-round rematch this weekend in the premier dual-meet wrestling tournament of the season.

John Glenn beat Spencerport 37-10 in the 2010 final of the Union-Endicott Duals, and the squads highlight a 15-school field confirmed for the annual event this Saturday and Sunday. They join Shenendehowa and St. Anthony's as top seeds in their respective pools for round-robin competition on the opening day.

The four pool winners advance to the single-elimination championship bracket the following day.

Spencerport was the three-time defending champion before losing last year's final to John Glenn. The

Rangers find themselves with the most difficult opening-day assignment among the top seeds as they are pitted against Brentwood in the final Saturday match.

The pools are set up as follows:

   A - John Glenn, MacArthur, Union-Endicott, Brockport.

B - Shenendehowa, Mahopac, Chenango Forks.

C - Spencerport, Brentwood, Long Beach, John Jay Cross River.

D - St. Anthony's, Fulton, Minisink Valley, Sayville.

Girls basketball rankings: Please keep Perry Novak in your thoughts. The veteran Herkimer sports reporter, who's handled the rankings and all-state selections for the NYSSWA in girls soccer, basketball and softball for a number of years, fell ill over the weekend and is in the hospital.

In Perry's absence, I'll step in to handle weekly girls hoops rankings in the five classes.

I was able to make contact with a number of Perry's regional contacts earlier today to advise them of the situation. If there are any who did not receive my e-mail, please contact me via e-mail as soon as possible.

Awards advisory: Reporters and varsity basketball coaches are hereby notified that the first deadline for two prestigious awards is coming up.

The Basketball Coaches Association of New York, which presents the Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball awards each year, has a Jan. 21 cutoff for nominating

worthy players. There is a link to the nomination form (in a PDF format) on the BCANY website.

The criteria for consideration are: (1) Basketball skills and accomplishments; (2) Academic standing -- not grades, but a student in good standing; (3) Must be a senior; (4) Community service; (5) Leadership; (6) Character.

Worth the ride: The Bishop Loughlin boys basketball team was en route to Philadelphia yesterday for the Villa Holiday Classic when the bus broke down.

By the Lions arrived at the Palestra, they had almost no time left to dress and warm up. But that didn't stop them from earning a 63-54 victory over Philadelphia's Dobbins Tech, featuring LaSalle recruit Jerrell Wright. Making it an even better accomplishment was the fact that Loughlin was without senior Davonte Dunham, who was sick and had to remain home.

Junior forward Travis Charles finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds and sparked the decisive 16-2 run after Dobbins Tech had pulled ahead late in the third quarter.

Boys & Girls pulled out a 62-61 win over two-time Philadelphia Public School champion Imhotep Charter in the same all-day event as Mike Taylor scored 18 points and Leroy Fludd had 17, including the winning bucket.

It was the fifth game in six days for the Kangaroos, who were on their way home from a second-place finish at the 16-team Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Imhotep Charter, featuring George Washington University recruit Erik Copes, was fresh off a triumph in the national division of the STOP-DWI Holiday Classic in Binghamton.
