Leading off today: The NYSPHSAA boys lacrosse tournament is branching out again.
The tournament title games had generally rotated between Central New York and Long Island sites before the finals tripleheader was awarded to Rochester in 2009. Now, the 2012 finals have been awarded to Middletown High School.
Middletown recently hosted the state boys soccer final fours for the first time to begin a two-year contract for that event.
"We're really excited for us and the community," Middletown AD David Coates told The Times Herald-Record. "It brings more revenue into Middletown. We did a nice job of hosting the soccer championships and a lot of teams and players liked the surface. I think that played a big part of it."
This spring's championship games are scheduled to be played at Cicero-North Syracuse. Section 9 hosted the lacrosse championships in 1994 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.
All-state football: A trio of dynamic offensive stars rounds out the list of 2010 NYSSWA football player of the year honorees.
Rush-Henrietta senior quarterback Ashton Broyld was selected player of the year in Class AA after steering the Royal Comets to a 13-0 record and first New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship in November.
Two seniors were recognized in Class A: Archbishop Stepinac quarterback Tyrell Goodman and Aquinas running back Mike Messina, who helped the Little Irish to their record fifth state tournament crown.
The awards in classes B, C and D were announced last week.
The New York State Sportswriters Association also announced its all-state teams in the two large-school classes today. Those picks as well as the small-school teams released last week can be found on the reference page of RoadToSyracuse.com.
A big note of gratitude goes out to the NYSSWA's Steve Grandin for doing the bulk of the work in assembling the all-state team for the second straight year.
Following up: Plans for security at the Kingston-Newburgh boys basketball rematch remain uncertain, The Daily Freeman reported.
The teams meet again Feb. 11 in Newburgh. Last week's game in Kingston was stopped with 14.2 seconds to go and Newburgh was awarded a 58-53 victory after fans spilled out onto the court during an altercation between players.
The paper reported that the police and security staffing had been beefed up last week partly in response

to the New Year’s Eve shooting of two Newburgh residents at an illegal night club in Kingston. Nine people have been arrested in connection with that incident, which prompted Kingston Police Lt. Timothy Matthews to contact school officials before the game.
(Matthews) said the department had information that there were people intent on creating a disruption related to the New Year’s Eve shootings in Kingston,” Kingston school board president James Shaughnessy told the paper. In effect, that those bent on disruption saw it as an opportunity for payback for Kingston people shooting Newburgh people.”
Perhaps they could start preparations for the rematch by taking note of this:
No tickets will be sold at the door for Friday’s showdown between Troy (7-2) and host Albany CBA (9-0). Tickets will be sold beginning tomorrow at CBA.
Milestones: Argyle boys basketball coach Jack Sherwin picked up victory No. 300 last night as the Scots rolled past Fort Edward 56-30. Sherwin owns a combined 300-138 mark at Newcomb and Argyle.
Honeoye Falls-Lima swimming coach Norm Schueckler also reached 300 as the Cougars downed Livonia 107-79 in a non-leaguer.
A day earlier, Dan Ricci of Ossining won his 300th girls basketball game with an 85-36 triumph against Westlake. Standout soph point guard Saniya Chong led the way with 23 points and 10 assists.
Also on Monday, the Arlington girls basketball team scored its first win ever against nearby Our Lady of Lourdes, a 10-time NYSPHSAA champion.
"Big win for our season, big win for the program," Arlington coach Kim Costello told The Poughkeepsie Journal. "And I couldn't think of a better group of girls to get this win."
