Leading off today: Five teenagers were wounded by gunshots Friday night as spectators exited a basketball game at Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn, various New York City media reported.
The injuries for four males and a female, all between the ages of 17 and 19, were not considered life-threatening, authorities said. All were treated at Kings County Hospital Center. Another male was punched in the mouth.
They were attending Loughlin's game against Christ The King, which scored an eight-point win in overtime. The shots were fired just after 10 p.m. near a basketball court outside the school, and police were unsure whether one or more gunmen were involved.
Witnesses said the shooting followed a confrontation between a small group of young men; it was unclear whether they had attended the game.
PSAL investigating: The PSAL is looking into a confrontation between the Banneker girls basketball coach and his star sophomore's father during a game Friday, The New York Post reported.
The altercation, which reportedly turned physical, was triggered by coach Jonathan Anderson's decision to sit guard Africa Williams in the first quarter vs. Boys & Girls for academic reasons. Mike Williams, the player's father approached Anderson near the bench after the first quarter, and a source told the paper they argued until Anderson told Williams to leave the area.
When Williams refused, Anderson physically attempted to escort him out -- triggering a shoving match that moved into a hallway behind the benches where punches were thrown before school safety officers could intervene, the paper reported. Anderson and WIlliams both denied the encounter turned physical.
Williams was escorted out of the building, and AD Francie Johnson replaced the shaken coach on the bench. Africa Williams, a transfer from Bishop Ford averaging 30 points a game, finished with 16 points in Banneker’s 66-47 win.
