Sunday, Jan. 17, 2011: Five shot after Loughlin-CTK game Friday
Leading off today: Five teenagers were wounded by gunshots Friday night as spectators exited a basketball game at Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn, various New York City media reported.

The injuries for four males and a female, all between the ages of 17 and 19, were not considered life-threatening, authorities said. All were treated at Kings County Hospital Center. Another male was punched in the mouth.

They were attending Loughlin's game against Christ The King, which scored an eight-point win in overtime. The shots were fired just after 10 p.m. near a basketball court outside the school, and police were unsure whether one or more gunmen were involved.

Witnesses said the shooting followed a confrontation between a small group of young men; it was unclear whether they had attended the game.

PSAL investigating: The PSAL is looking into a confrontation between the Banneker girls basketball coach and his star sophomore's father during a game Friday, The New York Post reported.

The altercation, which reportedly turned physical, was triggered by coach Jonathan Anderson's decision to sit guard Africa Williams in the first quarter vs. Boys & Girls for academic reasons. Mike Williams, the player's father approached Anderson near the bench after the first quarter, and a source told the paper they argued until Anderson told Williams to leave the area.

When Williams refused, Anderson physically attempted to escort him out -- triggering a shoving match that moved into a hallway behind the benches where punches were thrown before school safety officers could intervene, the paper reported. Anderson and WIlliams both denied the encounter turned physical.

Williams was escorted out of the building, and AD Francie Johnson replaced the shaken coach on the bench. Africa Williams, a transfer from Bishop Ford averaging 30 points a game, finished with 16 points in Banneker’s 66-47 win.

Pole vault record: Arlington senior Jordan Yamoah cleared 17-1 in the pole vault at the Stanner Games yesterday to extend his state record by an inch.

Yamoah had broken his own record of 16-6 at a meet last month.

In other action at The Armory, North Shore's Samantha Nadel won the girls invitational 3,000 meters in a Long Island-record time of 9:41.36. Ward Melville's Mary Kate Anselmini earned second in a Suffolk County-record time of 9:48.0.

Milestone: Greece Olympia 140-pound wrestler Joe Bonaldi scored his 200th varsity victory en route to a championship at Hilton's Clayton Barnard Tournament. Bonaldi, 27-0 this season after placing fourth in the 2010 NYSPHSAA championships, decisioned Medina's Dylan Duncanson 11-5.

Immaculata pulls upset: Immaculata, ranked sixth in Class C, beat Class B No. 3 Aquinas 66-65 in girls basketball as Taylor Heinhold blocked a last-second shot to preserve the win.

Chelsey Rogowski scored 20 points and Lindsay Nowak added 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Bears, who are 11-5.

St. Mary's wins squeaker: Long Island power St. Mary's scored a 67-66 victory

over New Rochelle on Charles McCann's three-point play with nine seconds remaining.

St. Mary's (12-0), is ranked fifth in Class A and New Rochelle 13th in AA by the NYSSWA.

Justin Bailey paced the winners with 19 points.

McMann was coming off a 17-point performance earlier in the week during a 57-55 triumph against Class A No. 4 Long Island Lutheran.

Pioneer girls win contest: The Pioneer girls basketball team has won MaxPreps.com's national contest for the best video of a pregame ritual, netting a $5,000 prize.

Pioneer won the "Signatures fueled by G Series" contest for its video submission, "For The Stripe," which explained its connection to Janet Payne. Payne, the wife of former coach Max Payne, died of breast cancer in 2007.

The video was judged the best for its creativity, originality of ritual and appropriateness of ritual. By the way, the Panthers (ranked 19th in the state in Class A)

improved to 9-1 with a 75-19 win Friday vs. Amherst. Everyone on the roster scored, led by Jenna Crabb with 20.

More girls basketball: Penfield won Section 5's game of the year Friday as sophomore backup guard Katie Kayes buried a half-court shot at the end of the third overtime for a 73-70 victory against Irondequoit.

"I just threw it up hoping for it to go in. I didn't want a fourth overtime," Kayes told the Democrat and Chronicle.

Sophomore forward Michelle Nesselbush scored 19 of her 21 points after halftime for Penfield (10-0), which has been without senior Laura McNamara (ankle injury), last year's team MVP.

   Irondequoit is 8-2.

Also Friday, Murry Bergtraum took a most uncharacteristic flogging.

Santa Ana, Calif., Mater Dei guard Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, a UConn recruit who played for Team USA's Under-17 World Championship team last summer, had 17 points and eight rebounds as the nation's No. 3 team routed Bergtraum was 85-45 in the Hoophall Classic Friday night in Springfield, Mass.

Mater Dei held the Blazers to 30.8 percent shooting.

More boys basketball: Class AA No. 6 Albany CBA earned a 66-65 win over Troy on Friday as senior Max Weaver (14 points) canned two free throws with :02.1 to go. Troy was unable to get off a shot attempt just past midcourt as time expired.

Cornell recruit Galal Cancer went to the bench with two fouls midway through the first quarter. When he returned after halftime, Cancer scored 10 of his 18 points and chipped in with two assists during a 24-12 third quarter.

“I didn’t want to watch anymore. The guys held tough in the first half,” Cancer told The Times Union. ”Once I saw a gap, I was attacking it.”

Passings: Joseph Thomas, 120-46-7 as the Chaminade football coach from 1948 to 1969, died Jan. 6 at the age of 95. Thomas retired in 1988 after 40 years in numerous roles at Chaminade, where he coached actor Brian Dennehy , a 1956 graduate.

Monroe-Woodbury football player Justin Dimino died Jan. 9 at the age of 16. The junior was a starting defensive back for the Crusaders. Memorial contributions may be made to Justin T. Dimino Scholarship Fund, c/o David Bernsley, Principal, Monroe-Woodbury High School, 155 Dunderberg Road, Central Valley, NY 10917.

Extra points: North Tonawanda has named Todd Faddoul as boys lacrosse coach. Faddoul, 88-43 at Niagara-Wheatfield from 1997 to 2002 before stepping down to concentrate on his job as a police officer in Niagara Falls, inherits a team that went 0-16 last spring.
