Leading off today: Sauquoit Valley snapped West Canada Valley’s
49-game home-court winning streak in boys basketball with a 62-58 triumph last night.
Sauquoit Valley went on a 23-8 run over the final nine minutes to earn the victory. Mike Lallier and Mark Martin scored nine points apiece in the fourth quarter to pace the winners.
"There were a number of times when we were up eight or nine points where if we’d hit a shot we’d have been up double digits but we couldn’t get over that hump,” West Canada Valley coach Steve Porter told The Telegram, "mostly because of turnovers."
Sauquoit Valley is now 6-6 after an 0-3 start that included a 57-51 loss at home to West Canada Valley.
Truce: First-year Banneker girls basketball coach Jonathan Anderson and Mike Williams, father of star sophomore guard Africa Williams, appear to have worked out their differences, The New York Daily News reported.
Last Friday, the two got into a dispute that turned into a shouting match that had to be broken up by school safety officers during a game against Boys & Girls. Anderson alleged that Williams threw a punch that

missed, the paper reported.
"We talked about it and it's over with," Anderson said after a 71-50 victory vs. Boys & Girls in which Africa Williams scored 23 points. "We're just moving on from it. It's no big deal, just a matter of tempers flaring in the heat of the moment and that's it. We're OK with each other now. We're just focused on making our playoff run."
More girls basketball: Grand Island, ranked No. 1 in Class A, scored a 48-34 win vs. Lockport, fifth in class AA, on Tuesday. Kallie Banker led the way with 15 points, and Cassie Oursler added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Schedule concerns: When the snow piles up, so does the backlog of games. And that's becoming a bit of a problem on the eastern side of the state these days, where some school districts
have lost three days of classes -- and extra-curricular activities -- in two weeks.
"Usually we can just reschedule a game for the following day,” Chatham AD Scott Steltz told The Daily Mail. “We planned on moving games from Tuesday to Wednesday and now we have to move them again. The tough ones are modified games because we’re supposed to give the younger kids a day off between games.”
Besides finding mutually agreeable dates with the opponent, ADs have to schedule referees and game staff. And, of course, the building has to be available, too. That could mean moving other scheduled contests and/or practices.
“We don’t have too many games in February, so we have some room there," Cairo-Durham AD Greg Hagan said. "If we have more than one additional snow day from this point forward it may become an issue. We don’t want our basketball teams to play back-to-back. We also have to work around Regents exams, which are next week.
