Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011: Weather puts a dent in Buffalo-area wrestling tournament
Leading off today: Is it a league meet when 28 percent of the league can't get there to participate?

The latest blast of nasty winter weather kept eight of 28 member schools from participating in the ECIC Wrestling Championships being hosted by Clarence yesterday. Competitors from Orchard Park, Hamburg, West Seneca East, West Seneca West, East Aurora, Frontier, Springville and Holland were KO'd because their schools canceled after-school activities.

Weigh-ins were scheduled for 2 p.m., and by 11:30 a.m. only two schools had backed out. But six more dropped out by early afternoon, The Buffalo News reported.

Clarence AD Greg Kaszubski said the ECIC Committee considered gong to a Saturday/Sunday schedule or postpone the event for a week, but neither option was workable.

Short stay? Pittsford Mendon burst into the state Class A boys basketball rankings at No. 16 last week by virtue of a 66-52 win over Batavia. The Vikings' stay may prove to be short after a 52-47 loss to Pittsford Sutherland.

Zach Salvia scored six of his 15 points in overtime to lift the Knights. Ben Check had 11 of his 14 points in the third quarter and Trevor Blackwell had eight rebounds and five assists for Sutherland (9-2).

More overtime action: Kevin Alesi scored 48 points. And lost.

St. Joseph by the Sea edged Tottenville 99-94 in two overtimes on senior night in Huguenot.

Sea's Mike Nierva scored 36 points, and teammate Mike Scacco made three three-pointers in OT after having scored 23 points for the entire season.

Sea overcame a nine-point deficit over the final 1:59 in the first OT.

Girls basketball: Nicole Bini scored 21 points to lift Aquinas past Buffalo Nichols 65-62 in a non-leaguer between state-ranked teams -- Aquinas fifth in Class B and Nichols sixth in A.

Emily Brophy added 20 points for the Little Irish.

Vacancies at Port Jervis: Port Jervis football coach Mark Trotta has resigned after three seasons, The Times Herald-Record reported.

Trotta, a 1986 Port Jervis graduate who ran the JVs for nine seasons, was 10-16 following last fall's 1-8 finish. The Red Raiders beat Red Hook in their final game to avoid the program's first winless campaign since 1946.

Offensive coordinator, Ron Semerano, an assistant on the varsity staff for 27 years, told the paper he also will step down.

Trotta was following in the footsteps of Bob Corvino, who went 161-70-1 in 24 seasons.

More than a lacrosse school: Manhasset has won six Section 8 championships and three state titles in lacrosse since the last time the boys basketball squad won a Nassau County crown in 1997.

But an 11-1 start -- losing only to Chaminade -- this winter has people taking a closer look, especially after a 64-63 over previously undefeated Floral Park. Manhasset was behind by nine after three quarters, but Alessandro Troia’s layup with :38 left gave him 29 points for the night and capped a stretch 21-11 run.

“It’s lacrosse country here,” coach George Bruns told Newsday. “It’s a struggle sometimes to get people interested in basketball. Parents realize lacrosse is a much better vehicle for college. There’s a better opportunity to play college lacrosse than college basketball.”
