Leading off today: There were perhaps 30 undefeated girls basketball teams remaining across New York coming into Friday's action. There are a bunch fewer as of this morning.
•Sachem East suffered its first league loss in a 61-game stretch covering parts of five seasons, falling to Ward Melville 47-39.
The Flaming Arrows (12-1), defending NYSPHSAA Class AA champions, are ranked 14th in the state by the NYSSWA. Ward Melville (7-6) is unranked.
Caysea Cohen pace the victory with 19 points, five assists and eight steals. Vanessa Pryor had 14 points and Megan Murtagh added eight points and 13 rebounds.
•Binghamton Seton Catholic (9-5) knocked off Class B No. 2 Oneonta (14-1) 52-50 on Amy Ludovici's two free throws in the closing moments. Oneonta's desperation shot at the buzzer fell short.
Ludovici, who was 8-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter, had a game-high 25 points and added eight rebounds. Carolyn Gosney contributed nine points and 11 rebounds.
•Shannon Allan scored 15 points to lead Class AA No. 22 Warwick (13-1) to a 45-35 win vs. No. 12 Monroe-Woodbury (11-1) in a non-leaguer. Warwick went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
“It's a real big win. They're an excellent team,” Warwick coach Jim O'Brien told The Times Herald-Record. “We played tough at the end of the game and that's what made a difference.”
Sarah Lennon had 15 points in the victory.
Aquinas still rolling: Class A No. 3 Aquinas stretched its winning streak to 12 games with 64-59 victory at No. 12 Bishop Kearney.
The Little Irish took charge with a 10-1 run that gave then a 56-52 lead with 3:17 to play. "We did not handle their press," Kearney coach Jon Boon told the Democrat and Chronicle. "We did not block out. They made plays at the end of the game, all of the stuff we talked about in the last timeouts."
