Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011: Ossining soph sensation Chong scores 61
Leading off today: Saniya Chong scored two points in the first quarter last night.

And then the Ossinng sophomore heated up a little -- scoring 15 in the second quarter.

And she wasn't even close to being done.

Chong, the first Ossining player to score 1,000 points before the end of her 10th-grade season, poured in 44 more points after the half to finish with 61 in Ossining's 84-69 win over visiting John Jay-East Fishkill in the Section 1 Class AA basketball quarterfinals.

The 5-foot-9 guard's previous high had been 47 vs. Briarcliff. Kristin McGarvey of Pearl River set the Section 1 record of 63 in a game in the 1989-90 season.

Chong also finished with five assists and 10 steals. She made seven 3-pointers and was 14-for-16 at the line.

"We had 10 turnovers in the first quarter," coach Dan Ricci said. "We were stagnant and missing shots. We needed her to put the team on her back."

Third-seeded Ossining next takes on No. 18 seed New Rochelle, which has already upset No. 2 Arlington and No. 7 Mahopac, in the sectional semifinals March 3.

Mohapac's recovery from an 0-18 mark last season ended with a 54-40 loss to New Ro, which got 12 points from senior Misha Green.

Section 2 upsets abound: The annual squawking about the seeding of the Albany area's large-school class undoubtedly picked up steam as the No. 2 (Albany Academy) and No. 3 (Bethlehem) seeds from the Suburban Council lost, and Shaker, the league's No. 4 seed, also nearly tumbled out of the postseason.

It again raises the question of how much longer Section 2 can continue its archaic seeding policy.

Albany Academy exited against Amsterdam, 56-52. Bethlehem was taken out in OT by Bishop Maginn, 67-64. Shaker struggled past LaSalle, 36-35, as David Morrison made a free throw with 4.7 seconds left.

Defending NYSPHSAA Class AA champ Albany CBA outscored Saratoga by 28-0 in the opening quarter en route to a 70-28 victory.

Greenport out: Greenport (18-2), the NYSSWA's No. 1 team for much of the season and ranked fifth this week, was eliminated from the postseason via a 56-53 loss to Port Jefferson in the Section 11 Class C final.

Junior Anthony Lanieri hit both ends of a one-and-one with :12 left to wrap up The victory for the Royals (12-7), who will play Ross in the Suffolk C-D game on Friday and then take on Friends Academy in the Long Island Class C

title game.

Looking for help: There are at least two media organizations seeking stringers for the state wrestling tournament this weekend in Albany. Anyone interested in a possible writing gig should e-mail me ASAP. I'll be monitoring e-mail all day Thursday and will attempt to get you synched up with the folks looking for help.

More heartache: Section 5 is mourning again after the second fatal accident in nine days.

Webster Thomas junior Daniel DeSanctis, 16, regarded as one of the better wrestlers in Monroe County this season, was killed in a snowmobile crash on Monday afternoon in Lewis County.

DeSanctis was alone when he drove off the side of the trail and down an embankment, striking several

trees, Lewis County investigators said. He was flown to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, where he died from his injuries.

DeSanctis reached the state qualifier two weekends ago.

Last week, Churchville-Chili basketball player Dijon Pratt was killed and a teammate critically injured in a two-car crash.

Coming up: Assuming another RG&E power outage doesn't wreck any more of my electric-powered devices, I'll be back Thursday evening with details of some interesting games that have crept onto the 2011 football schedule.

Extra points: Hicksville senior Tim Parker has been selected Gatorade's male soccer player of the year for New York. Parker, who'll play at St. John's next season, scored 25 goals and added eight assists last fall for the Comets.
