Thursday, April 26, 2007: "Putt" LaMay dies; brought state basketball tourney to Glens Falls
Leading off today: Bernard "Putt" LaMay, a huge figure in Section 2 sports, died on Wednesday at the age of 85.

LaMay coached basketball, football and golf for Saratoga Springs, Fort Edward and Glens Falls over a span of 33 years. He compiled a 110-28-6 mark in football at Glens Falls from 1953 to 1972 and had six undefeated seasons in that sport.

More recently, he was a force behind getting the New York State Public High School Athletic Association to move its boys basketball championships from Rochester to the Glens Falls Civic Center. He was the NYSPHSAA president from 1978-80.

"He was a prince of a man." current NYSPHSAA Executive Director Nina Van Erk told The Post-Star. "He'll be sorely missed by many people.''

LaMay was raised in Whitehall, where he was a star in football, basketball and track. He went on to play at Green Mountain College and Ithaca College.

LoHud.com is a finalist for major industry award: The Journal News crew earned some well-deserved recognition this week from Editor & Publisher and MediaWeek magazines, being selected as a finalist in the 2007 EPpy Awards.

LoHud.com's Varsity Central site is nominated for the best sports web site with fewer than 1 million unique monthly visitors. The Gannett property is up against well-know industry heavyweights Kusports.com (operated by The Lawrence Journal-World) and TideSports.com (The Tuscaloosa News). The fourth finalist in the category is McHenryCountySports.com (NorthWest News Group of Greater Chicago).

LoHud.com also is a blogging finalist for its New York Yankees blog.

Twelfth annual EPpy winners will be revealed at the Interactive Newspaper Conference and Trade Show in Miami on May 24. The awards honor the best web sites in the media world, including newspapers, TV-cable and magazines.
