Leading off today: If softball is in fact too pitcher-driven, would moving the pitching circle back three feet make a difference? It's an
interesting proposition that Jay Skurski reported on over the weekend for the Greater Niagara Newspapers.
Skurski spoke with long-time North Tonawanda coach T.K. Murphy, an advocate of moving the circle from 40 feet from the plate to 43 feet. In Murphy's view, that puts the ball in play a little more often.
"I just don’t think it’s a team game anymore," Murphy said.
Skurski noted that colleges already have moved the circle to 43 feet as have some American Softball Association tournaments and a few states -- including Florida, which hosts a number of New York teams each spring during vacation/training trips. Kenmore West coach Matt Chimera said his pitcher's strikeout numbers dipped during games in Florida this month.
"She was still very good, but her strikeouts weren’t as high," he said.
I feel a draft 'round here: Wow, the quality of football in New York is getting so good that The Sunday League is even scooping up our punters.
OK, sorry. Chalk it up to irrational exuberance. But you have to admit it is pretty cool that the Jacksonville Jaguars used a fourth-round pick to take Pittsford's Adam Podlesh in the NFL Draft.
