Monday, April 30, 2007: Would three feet mean a world of difference in softball?
Leading off today: If softball is in fact too pitcher-driven, would moving the pitching circle back three feet make a difference? It's an interesting proposition that Jay Skurski reported on over the weekend for the Greater Niagara Newspapers.

Skurski spoke with long-time North Tonawanda coach T.K. Murphy, an advocate of moving the circle from 40 feet from the plate to 43 feet. In Murphy's view, that puts the ball in play a little more often.

"I just don’t think it’s a team game anymore," Murphy said.

Skurski noted that colleges already have moved the circle to 43 feet as have some American Softball Association tournaments and a few states -- including Florida, which hosts a number of New York teams each spring during vacation/training trips. Kenmore West coach Matt Chimera said his pitcher's strikeout numbers dipped during games in Florida this month.

"She was still very good, but her strikeouts weren’t as high," he said.

I feel a draft 'round here: Wow, the quality of football in New York is getting so good that The Sunday League is even scooping up our punters.

OK, sorry. Chalk it up to irrational exuberance. But you have to admit it is pretty cool that the Jacksonville Jaguars used a fourth-round pick to take Pittsford's Adam Podlesh in the NFL Draft.

The University of Maryland punter was the 101st pick of the draft but the first kicker taken. Place-kickers and punters rarely get taken in the draft -- and then often in the sixth or seventh rounds.

Other New Yorkers spotted by NYSSWA snitches:

  • Running back Brian Leonard (Gouverneur and Rutgers University) to the St. Louis Rams in the second round.
  • Guard Josh Beekman (Amsterdam and Boston College) to the Chicago Bears in fourth round.
  • Defensive back Corey Graham (Buffalo Turner/Carroll and New Hampshire) to the Bears in the fifth round.
  • Defensive back Rashad Barksdale (Hudson High and SUNY Albany) to the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round.
  • Safety Daren Stone (Lockport and Maine) to the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round.
  • Linebacker Kelvin Smith (North Rockland and Syracuse linebacker) to the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round.
Extra points: I can't remember what I went there looking for in the first place, but I stumbled upon the high school softball site of the Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton over the weekend. I just love the use of the respective school logos. . . . Final draft note: Kevin McMahan (Aquinas and Maine), the last pick of the 2006 draft by the Oakland Raiders, caught on late last season with Indianapolis and remains on the Colts' roster. Indy drated two Ohio State wideouts -- Anthony Gonzalez and Roy Hall this weekend -- so McMahan's future there might be iffy.
