Sunday, May 20, 2007: Rhodes-Devey breaks Centrowitz's record for Eddy Games mile
Leading off today: Brian Rhodes-Devey appears poised to close out his career on a high note. The Guilderland senior highlighted the 67th annual Eddy Games in Schenectady with a meet-record time of 4:09.92 for the mile yesterday.

He broke the mark of 4:10.6 by Matt Centrowitz of Power Memorial in 1973.

"It was raining and I didn't have anything else to do, so I figured why not come here and run?" a joking Rhodes-Devey told The Times Union. "I'll have to call Mr. Centrowitz and apologize for breaking his record."

The national leader in the mile this season is Centrowitz's son Matt, a Maryland high school senior who clocked 4:08.38 at Penn. Rhodes-Devey, by the way, completed his day by taking Greenwich distance ace Caitlin Lane to her junior prom.

Chaminade loses in OT: Max Seligmann scored 2:54 into overtime to lift Delbarton, N.J., (17-0) ranked No. 4 nationally by LaxPower over No. 13 Chaminade (12-3), 8-7.

Delbarton never led until Seligmann's goal.

Small-school softball update: Class C softball powerhouse Bolivar-Richburg had its winning streak of more than 50 games broken Saturday by Webster Thomas. The Wolverines and Hornell were playing doubleheaders with Greece Arcadia and Thomas, the two best Class AA teams in Section 5.

Details are (less than) sparse as no media outlet seems to have details on B-R's first loss since the 2005 state qualifier against Addison.

Extra points: Island Trees is the first surprise loser in post-season baseball, dropping a 1-0 decision to Seaford yesterday. Island Trees, ranked No. 3 in Class A by the NYSSWA, finishes 18-2-1. . . . The New York Daily News reports that Christ the King boys basketball coach Bob Oliva is recovering after undergoing gall bladder surgery last week. . . . The Niagara Gazette says there has been talk of a merger between the Niagara Frontier and Niagara-Orleans leagues, but nothing appears imminent. As is often the case, the potential effect on rivalries is a big hurdle to clear.
