Wednesday, May 23, 2007: Parent accused of attacking son's JV baseball coach
Leading off today: The father of a Middletown junior varsity athlete has been arrested for attacking his son's coach on May 1 after the boy was removed from a baseball game, police said.

Randi Reed, 47, of Wallkill, surrendered at Middletown City Court on Monday, the Times Herald-Record reported this morning. He was charged with second-degree harassment, a violation, and released on his own recognizance. He faces a fine and/or 15 days in jail if convicted.

According to police, Reed became upset when his son, Justin, was taken out of a game at Watts Park. Randi Reed entered the dugout and confronted coach Brian McDevitt. Reed, according to the report, put both of his hands around McDevitt's collar. McDevitt tried to push off Reed as another parent and a high school security officer intervened.

Reed reportedly broke free and "rushed the coach again." He grabbed McDevitt and the coach was able to push him away, the report said.

The three-week lag between the game and the arrest was the result of the high school's investigation. "We can't let our coaches, nor let referees or anyone else, be subjected to this type of parental behavior," Middletown Superintendent Kenneth Eastwood told the newspaper. "We are not going to tolerate it."

J-D girls out: Seventh-seeded Cazenovia upset second-seeded Jamesville-DeWitt, 13-8, yesterday in the Section 3 girls lacrosse Class C quarterfinals.

Freshman Gabby Jacquith scored three goals for

Cazenovia (13-9), which earned its first sectional victory ever a day earlier against Canton. J-D finishes 15-3.

Heart transplant: Brewster junior soccer player Jessi-Ann Bettcher, 17, underwent heart transplant surgery in New York City on Monday.

Bettcher was diagnosed in October with an incurable heart condition -- dilated cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart that weakens its ability to pump blood. Surgeons had installed an internal defibrillator and pacemaker in November to help stimulate the heart.

The defender registered one goal and one assist for the varsity last fall.

The Putnam watch: Newburgh Free Academy senior Kyle Putnam has gone 48 straight innings without allowing an earned run, though his path into the record book appears murky.

The National Federation record book cites a string of 55 innings by Christopher Smith (Wantagh, 1998) as the best effort by a New Yorker. However, Bill Anderson (Queensbury, 1988) and Bob Blevins Jr. (Briarcliff, 2002) are believed to have posted streaks of 85 and 67 2/3 innings, respectively, that were never sent to the National Federation for ratification.

The national mark is 115 2/3 innings by Houston schoolboy legend David Clyde as a junior in 1972.

Extra points: Allegany-Limestone senior Blake Eaton has broken his own Section 6 shot put record with a throw of 64-10 in a dual meet. He'll attend Penn State in the fall.
