Wednesday, July 25, 2007: North Tonawanda gridders pose as transfer students to spy on opponent
Leading off today: St. Francis football coach Jerry Smith confirmed to The Buffalo News that he was duped by two North Tonawanda High players who posed as transfers from Texas in a bid to learn more about the Red Raiders.

St. Francis plays North Tonawanda on Aug. 31 in the teams' opener -- a rare crossover between strong Monsignor Martin and Section 6 teams.

The two NT players -- projected starters -- and a third boy they said was a visiting cousin used fictitious last names during their day on the St. Francis campus. They toured the facilities and eventually met with Smith.

The scheme fell apart when North Tonawanda coaches got wind of it from other players. "A couple kids weren’t thinking real straight," NT head coach Eric Jantzi told the newspaper. "It was a little out of character for what we do . . . They wanted to see how hard St. Francis was working. That was their rationale. They came back and said, 'They’re working harder than we are.'"

Jantzi said the players were sent back to St. Francis to apologize.

Addison coach charged: A teacher from the Addison Central School Distict has been charged with public lewdness. New York State Police say Anthony Fazzary, 43, of Corning was caught masturbating in the Painted Post Wal-Mart Parking lot on Thursday.

Fazzary was given an appearance ticket and will appear in Erwin Town court later this month.

School sources said Fazzary is a physical education instructor at the Tuscarora Elementary School in Addison. The district web site lists him as the varsity baseball and girls tennis coach at Addison.

School board president William Peoples said the matter could be discussed in executive session at the next school board meeting.

Opening ceremonies tonight: The 30th Empire State Games kick off tonight for 6,000 amateur athletes from across the state with opening ceremonies at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.

This is the first time the ESGs are being held in Westchester County. Competition is 28 sports runs through Sunday.

Chrystie gets Oxford job: Mike Chrystie's hectic year continues with word that he's being named varsity football coach at Oxford, his alma mater.

Chrystie was an oustanding football player for Oxford from 1997 to 2000 and the NYSSWA's Class D co-player of the year as a senior running back/kicker, then went on to a career at Colgate.

Chrystie, at the time a teacher in the Windsor school district, was diagnosed this spring with Hodgkins Disease (Lymphoma). He quickly began undergoing chemotheraphy and has been doing well.

Chrystie and his fiancee Missy moved up their wedding this summer, and now both have teaching jobs awaiting in Oxford.

Extra points: Spencerport's Bill Jacotout has been selected National Wrestling Coaches Association Region I coach of the year. Jacotout recently completed his 26th season with the Rangers and has a 317-28-1 record there in addition to his 34-6-1 mark in three seasons at Pembroke.
