Leading off today: The football field at Fairport High School will be the site of an event tonight honoring the memory of five recent graduates, including four cheerleaders, who died in a summer car crash.
Hannah Congdon, Bailey Goodman, Meredith McClure, Sara Monnat and Katie Shirley were killed June 26 when the SUV they were traveling in collided with a tractor trailer. The celebration recognizing the girls, frequently referred to as "Fairport's Angels," is expected to draw 5,000 people. It begins at 7 p.m.
Bat ban case kicks off today: Arguments are expected to begin today in the lawsuit seeking to reverse the metal bat ban enacted by New York's city council.
The suit was filed in Manhattan Federal Court by a coalition of parents, coaches and sporting goods manufacturers who oppose the ban on metal bats in NYC high school baseball games. Ban supporters say metal bats are more dangerous than wood. Opponents say there is no scientific evidence to support that.
East Islip QB commits: Cool lead in Newsday yesterday explaining how East Islip quarterback Rob Calabrese and Central Florida head coach George O'Leary hit it off almost immediately during a June visit.
The result of the visit is that Calabrese has given an oral commitment to attend UCF next fall, despite interest from a number of other Division I programs.
