Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007: Unatego appoints Rigas as football coach; Mushtare in limbo at Oneonta
   Leading off today: Unatego finally has a varsity football coach again. The vacancy created when the school board did not retain John Mushtare will be filled by former Oneonta coach Art Rigas, 45, who spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Milford Prep in New Berlin.

   He was approved by Unatego’s board on Monday, The Daily Star reported. Mushtare’s three-season coaching tenure ended with a 17-10 record on July 18 when his re-appointment was rejected by the board. Unatego will enter the 2007 season on a five-game winning streak.

   Rigas was 20-17 with Oneonta from 2000-03. He also spent five seasons as an assistant for Jim Hoover at Walton and seven years as an assistant at Oneonta.

   Unatego opens its season with a non-league game at Oneonta on Aug. 31, and Mushtare could be on Oneonta’s staff by then. But he has a hurdle to clear before landing a job with the district as a chemistry teacher.

   The Oneonta board of education will discuss his potential appointment at Wednesday's meeting. The Daily Star said unidentified sources indicate Mushtare is under investigation at Unatego because of allegations of grade fixing in his physics class.

   "I know there were a lot of rumors coming out of Unatego, many (of which) I find hard to believe," Oneonta Superintendent Michael Shea told the newspaper.

   Mushtare did not return telephone messages left on his home answering machine Monday, the newspaper said. Unatego school board President Deb Davis and Oneonta board President Grace Larkin also didn’t return calls.

   Liverpool's Ash picks SU: Liverpool guard Tyler Ash will play basketball for Syracuse University beginning in 2008.

  
   Ash, a 6-foot-2 guard who was 10th-team all-state in Class AA as a junior, said she met with second-year Orange coach Quentin Hillsman on Saturday to finalize her choice.

   Dan Olson of Collegiate Girls Basketball Report rates Ash, 16, as the No. 57 player in her class and sixth-best prospect at shooting guard, The Post-Standard reported. Hoopgurlz.com rates Ash as the No. 25 overall prospect.

   The newspaper also reports that SU is in the mix for Shenise Johnson, a two-time All-Greater Rochester player of the year. Johnson is a major recruit and lists Boston College, Georgia, LSU and Syracuse as her finalists.

   Cause of death unknown: The sudden death of Lakeland junior Elizabeth Schatkun, 16, last week remains unexplained.

   The varsity swimmer and JV lacrosse player was found unconscious Thursday night and was treated at two hospitals according to Lakeland Principal Cheryl Champ, who said Schatkun was declared brain dead on Saturday but remained on life support for organ donation.

   The cause of death may not be determined for at least two months, the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office said. Counselors were on hand at the school Monday, and district officials said about a dozen students spoke to counselors.

   Extra points: Former Shaker boys soccer coach Bill Bogue has been named to run the men's team at Adirondack Community College. Bogue won Suburban Council titles at Shaker in 2000 and 2004. His 2004 squad was ranked 13th in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
