Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007: Southerland leaves Cardozo, enrolls in Massachusetts prep school
Leading off today: James Southerland, Benjamin Cardozo's 6-foot-6 wing player, has transferred to Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., to continue his basketball career, The Post-Standard in Syracuse reported Tuesday.

Southerland, who has given an oral commitment to Syracuse, averaged 17.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game as a junior. His father told the newspaper the smaller class sizes at Notre Dame prompted the move.

"Cardozo High School is an excellent academic school, one of the top in the city, but like most city schools it's overcrowded," Jim Southerland said.

Southerland helped Cardozo to a 23-6 record last winter.

Southerland is already enrolled and taking classes at Notre Dame, a national prep powerhouse. Last year's team included the acclaimed Michael Beasley, a freshman at Kansas State. Syracuse freshman Sean Williams attended Notre Dame Prep last year, and soph Paul Harris went to Notre Dame after graduating from Niagara Falls High School.

Southerland just turned 17, and the newspaper reported that there are rumors he would try to reclassify as a junior and come to Syracuse in the Class of 2009.

Fox expands into H.S. sports: WNYW, the Fox television network station in New York City, has launched MyFoxLocker.com, a web site dedicated to scholastic sports in the metropolitan area.

On a national level, Fox launched FoxHiLites.com, which it describes as a platform for sharing video and commentary for high school students. Students will be able to use that site to upload video and other content on subjects such as sports and music.

FoxHiLites.com launched in 23 cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, but none in New York.

New poll question posted: With the start of the new school sports year here, we'll be returning to a routine of posting a new unscientific survey question every one to two weeks.

This week's question is now available on the NYSSWA home page: Should the state football tournament championship games be rotated between Syracuse and a downstate site?

Extra points: Add Brighton to the list of schools with an artificial-turf field. The Barons expect their A-Turf field to be ready next month as part of $1.1 million in improvements. We've updated out list of rugs accordingly.
