Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007: Charter schools becoming a tricky issue for leagues, associations
Leading off today: The Buffalo News did an exhaustive story today in the issue of charter schools competing in sports.

Much of the story deals with the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School and the Charter School for Applied Technologies, which are both members of Section 6 this year.

It took reporter Keith McShea just a few paragraphs to get to the issue that's troubling sports administrators in several communities these days: Charter schools have no geographic boundaries, which by and large is the very reason Section 6 does not welcome private and Catholic schools to join.

It's a lengthy bit of reporting and reporting, and definitely worth your time. With New York possibly approving as many as 150 additional charter schools in the coming decade, there are going to be significant issues related to sports -- especially in the Buffalo and Long Island areas.

Meet the Peglegs: Stuyvesant High in Manhattan enjoys a reputation for academic success if not football triumphs. The documentary "The Peglegs of Stuyvesant High" will air tonight (9 p.m.) and Friday (10:30 p.m.) on cable's CSTV Network.

The documentary covers the Peglegs (Peter Stuyvesant had a wooden leg, in case you wondered) and their 2006 season after going winless the previous year.

Arrested teacher was forced out: Former Somers JFK teacher and baseball coach William R. Menchen, charged with sexually abusing a female student, was forced to resign at the start of the 2006-07 school year after parents expressed concern about contacts he had with their daughter, school officials told The Journal News.

Menchen, 34, who was working as a substitute phys ed teacher at Rye Neck this fall, is charged with six misdemeanor counts in the alleged abuse of a girl, 15, he met in the 2005-06 school year at JFK.

A spokesman for JFK said Menchen would have been dismissed last year had he refused to resign.

"He had violated (New York Roman Catholic)

archdiocesian policy with regard to inappropriate contact with a student," said the spokesman, Alex Malecki. "At the time, an investigation did take place via the Westchester District Attorney's Office. No charges were filed."

The Rev. Stephen Norton, president of JFK, said Rye Neck had contacted AD Pat Maurer before hiring Menchen, and Rye Neck Superintendent Peter Mustich said there was a "glowing recommendation" from Maurer. "I'm not sure she had all the pieces of information at the time," Norton said of Maurer.

Putnam County sheriff's investigators accused Menchen of inappropriate conduct with a 15-year-old Putnam County girl. He is charged with one count of third-degree sexual abuse, three counts of child endangerment and two counts of unlawful imprisonment. Menchen is free on $15,000 bail and due back in Kent Town Court on Oct. 16.

Undefeated and uninvited: Newsday took a look today at the Long Island Lutheran football team, which is perfect through five games but won't be participating in postseason play because it's an independent.

Coach Chris Reno formed an exploratory committee two years ago to study joining Section 8, but L.I. Lutheran chose not to pursue that option. Next, he'll consider applying for admission into the CHSAA. In the meantime, AD Todd Duebner explained the realities of scheduling to the newspaper.

"In a way, you have to be nice to the team you play against," he said. "You have to make sure you don't run up the score. You don't want an athletic director calling you back and saying they don't want to play you anymore. It's not easy getting games because we're an independent, so we stress sportsmanship."

Extra points: Guard Keith Spellman of Thomas Jefferson High in Brooklyn reportedly has offers from Hofstra, Rutgers, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova. . . . Some leftovers from Adirondack's 71-49 football win over Saquoit Valley on Friday: Adirondack's Cody Hitt (eight carries, 240 yards) and SV's Pat Julian (31 carries, 315 yards) each scored six TDs, Hitt kicked nine extra points, and Adirondack rolled up 655 rushing yards and 700 total yards. . . . Pittsford Mendon scored a 2-0 shocker over Pittsford Sutherland in boys soccer Monday in a big rivalry game. Sutherland (9-2-1) was ranked No. 2 in Class A by the NYSSWA but has taken two losses in the last week.
