Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007: East Hampton's Petrie posts 700th victory in boys basketball
Leading off today: Ed Petrie collected his 700th victory in 49 years as a boys basketball coach with East Hampton's 77-65 triumph against Floral Park yesterday.

Petrie is second in state history to Archbishop Molloy's Jack Curran (885 at the start of the season) for career wins. He has coached 38 seasons at East Hampton after earlier stops at Bridgehampton and Pierson.

His overall record is 700-243, and Petrie won a NYSPHSAA championship in 1989.

Niagara Falls planning improvements: Niagara Falls schools Superintendent Carmen Granto has been rolling out plans for $17 million is capital improvents, nearly a third of which would reshape the athletic facilities.

The Niagara Gazette reported that Granto unveiled plans for an artificial-turf football field and all-weather track as well as a fieldhouse and a wrestling room, but the district needs roughly $500,000 to complete the plan, which would be

funded by a $5.5 million bond proposition.

Plans also call for additional seating at the school's pool.

Down the road, Granto is looking at another artificial-turf field for the soccer and lacrosse programs as well as new tennis courts. Board member Don King, though, has bigger ambitions. He wants the district to consider building a domed stadium at a cost of $14 million or more.

Extra points: Three Section 5 teams — Rush-Henrietta (AA), Newark (A) and Marion (C) — start off the season at No. 1 in our girls basketball ratings. . . . Deer Park wrestling alums came together Friday in memory of Ed Luksik Jr., who coached for 30 years and died Nov. 24 at age 67. Luksik retired in 1996 and later was presented the Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla.
