Leading off today: Newark's ascension to the top of Class A in the New York State Sportswriters Association girls basketball rankings this week proved to be short-lived as the Reds dropped a 63-52 decision to
Honeoye Falls-Lima last night.
Beth Allport scored 19 points, going 12-for-19 from the line, and Ashley Valenti added 13 points for the No. 3 Cougars. Alyssa Fenyn topped Newark with 28 points.
Newark held a 23-22 lead at the half but was outscored by 17-9 in the third quarter.
Voters say no: Liverpool school district voters defeated a $44.5 million capital project proposal that would have included major renovations to the athletic stadium at the high school. The proposition failed by a 1,954-1,620 margin.
The proposal included about $6.3 million to demolish and rebuild the athletic stadium and install new artificial turf. The district declared the stadium unusable in December, citing problems with the 9-year-old turf and its foundation.
According to The Post-Standard, some residents were unhappy with the "bundling" of the proposal and listing all items under one price tag, rather than breaking out the stadium and school-building repairs and expansions individually. District officials told the paper they did not want to "pit different groups against each other" and allow residents to select specific renovations to approve.
The project would have raised taxes by about $38 per year for an average $100,000 home for 20 years.
Ski championships conclude: Billy O'Connor of Mahopac and Paige Chardevoyne of Holy Names won the slalom championships yesterday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet at Whiteface Mountain.
O'Connor was timed in 1 minute, 33.61 seconds. Chardevoyne finished in 1:39.17, just ahead of Saranac Lake freshman Katie Madden (1:40.21).
