Monday, March 10, 2008: Meys brothers snare wrestling championships in Rochester
   Leading off today: The past two days were made for Meys at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester as Shenendehowa brothers Hunter and Austin Meys snared state wrestling championships.

   Hunter Meys, owner of the national record for career pins (212), wrapped up his career last night by decisioning Vestal's Josh Peters, 7-3, at 189 pounds to win his second consecutive Division 1 title. Younger brother Austin Meys also completed an undefeated season at 171 pounds by pinning Collin Toney of Mexico in 42 seconds and grabbing the outstanding wrestler award for Division 1.

   Hunter Meys concluded his career on a 93-match winning streak.

   The outstanding wrestler award in Division 2 went to Ian Paddock, a Warsaw junior with a gaudy 214-6 career record. Paddock and Palmyra-Macedon junior Alex Ekstrom each won their third state championship, triumphing at 130 and 135 pounds, respectively.

   "Yes, I'm happy, but I've got to get one more," Paddock said of a fourth state title.

   Jacoutot honored: Spencerport's Bill Jacoutot has been selected National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Coach of the Year, it was announced before last night's finals in Rochester.

   "He makes wrestling his life," Spencerport sophomore Paul Morabito told the Democrat and Chronicle. "I don't think there is another coach as dedicated as Mr. J."

   The Rangers finished the season ranked first in the state in Division 1, and Jacoutot (335-28-1 career record) pushed his roster of state champions to 11 as senior Bryan Bourne and junior Paul Glover grabbed the school's first championships since 1999.

   Basketball field set: If it's early March, it's time for Niagara Falls to beat a Section 5 opponent for a spot in the NYSPHSAA Class AA semifinals.

   The Wolverines scored an 82-67 victory over Rochester East on Sunday at Buffalo State to assure their fifth trip

  • to Glens Falls in the school’s eight seasons. Their only loss in six quarterfinal appearances was to McQuaid in 2003.

       Senior T.J. Crittenden scored seven of his 11 points in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer following the opening tip, and sophomore Davon Marshall put down four threes in the second quarter to build a 44-28 lead.

       Niagara Falls, which has won four state titles, takes on Baldwin in the semifinals next weekend in Glens Falls.

       Holy Cross advances: Holy Cross earned its first CHSAA boys basketball championship since 1968 by defeating Christ The King, 56-48, at Fordham University.

       Sylven Landesberg scored 24 points, including 10 in the final 5:30. The Virginia-bound senior hit six free throws in the fourth quarter to keep Holy Cross in command.

       Since there are no CHSAA Class AA teams outside New York City this year, the Knights will advance to the Federation tournament in Glens Falls March 28-30.

       Quick learners: Webster Thomas, which started playing hockey just six seasons ago, has its first state hockey championship under its belt.

       Winger Brett Bannon scored two twice, and defenseman Joe Amico scored one goal and assisted on two as the Titans defeated Thousand Islands, 5-2, in the NYSPHSAA Division 2 final in Utica.

       In Division 1, Massena got a last-minute goal in the third overtime to beat West Genesee, 3-2. Dfenseman Mike Mailhot slammed home a loose puck for the winning score.

       "It was just sheer excitement," Mailhot told The Observer-Dispatch. "Honestly, I was jumping up and down like a school girl."
