Thursday, March 27, 2008: Liverpool voters will consider new proposal to renovate condemned facility
Leading off today: Liverpool voters who rejected the school district's largest-ever capital proposal last month will get another crack at a scaled-back version that will address only the high school and the athletic stadium, The Post-Standard reported.

Superintendent Jan Matousek said the $6.3 million project would demolish the current stadium and replace the foundation, artificial-turf field, track, lighting, scoreboard and press box, and renovate the concession stand and bathrooms.

The project also includes about $200,000 for electrical work at the high school.

Liverpool's 9-year-old artificial turf in the stadium was declared unusable in December.

The new proposal will be voted on June 11. A $44.5 million proposal that voters rejected Feb. 27 included work at three other school buildings.

Matousek said the stadium was selected for repairs first because physical education classes and sports teams needed new locations this spring. The school buildings are still operational, she said. There is no timeline yet for work at the other schools.

Ex-athlete faces federal charges: former Lackawanna High School football and basketball star Deron Adams was arrested on federal drug charges Monday at his Blasdell home.

Police said Adams, 30, was a "very active" cocaine dealer in Western New York, The Buffalo News reported. He is accused of felony drug possession, conspiracy and gun possession counts. He was arrested after an investigation by local police and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Adams was the subject of controversy in 1996 when Lackawanna school officials allowed him to participate in sports after he had spent four months in jail for assaulting an off-duty police officer.

Fired Newark Valley teacher suing: Calling it guilt by association, former Newark Valley Central School District coach and phys ed teacher Lyndsey Wilcox has filed a lawsuit against the district contending she was improperly fired after being wrongfully accused of failing to report alleged sexual misconduct by her boyfriend, Todd J. Broxmeyer, The Press & Sun-Bulletin reported. She denies the charge.

Broxmeyer, who worked with field hockey leagues in Broome County and New Jersey, faces three counts of forcible rape in connection with the teenage girls he coached. Broxmeyer, who was arrested in December and remains in custody, is also charged in federal court with the production and possession of child pornography.

Wilcox's lawsuit contends Newark Valley Superintendent Mary Ellen Grant and Principal Diane Arbes accused her of knowing about and failing to report Broxmeyer's alleged

  • misconduct. Wilcox, 28, said she never saw Broxmeyer engage in any inappropriate conduct with young girls, the paper reported. "I never saw him do anything like that. Why would I believe the allegations?" she said.

Broxmeyer and Wilcox began living together in July 2006, a month after she was hired by Newark Valley, the complaint stated. Broxmeyer also served as a volunteer coach in the fall of 2007 while Wilcox was coach of the varsity field hockey team.

In a letter dated Feb. 14, Grant said she was recommending Wilcox's termination because school officials had information from "reliable law enforcement authorities" that the teacher was aware of Broxmeyer touching the breast of a player and failed to report it, the lawsuit said.

Wilcox's lawsuit contends the allegation is false and that she was not given the opportunity to respond. The school board voted to fire Wilcox effective March 10. She filed her complaint March 20 in state supreme court in Tioga County and seeks $1 million in damages, contending Newark Valley's action damages her reputation and makes her unemployable as a teacher.

Mechanicville addresses drinking: Mechanicville city authorities are cracking down on underage drinking by ticketing teens at house parties and trying to pass tougher alcohol laws. As a result, city police have charged at least 33 young adults, mostly teenagers, with unlawfully having alcohol at unsupervised beer parties this month according to Chief Joseph Waldron.

Mayor Anthony Sylvester intends to introduce a bill that would hold homeowners responsible for underage drinking on their properties. Violators would face a fine of $250 or 15 days in jail.

Late last Friday, police responded to a complaint of a loud party. Up to 50 people, all under 21, were found drinking cans of beer, Waldron said. Police apprehended 25 suspects while others fled. Some of those ticketed were high school athletes, Waldron said.

Jim DeBell Sr. dies: Jim DeBell Sr., a long-time coach and administrator in the Rochester City School District, died Tuesday at the age of 79.

DeBell began teaching and coaching baseball, soccer and basketball in 1954 at Jefferson High and succeeded Roger Bunce as athletic director in 1968. Though he retired in 1988, DeBell remained active in school sports until late last year. For 41 years, he taught a weekly BOCES certification course for prospective coaches who weren’t physical education majors.
