Sunday, April 6, 2008: BH-BL boys basketball coach retiring
Leading off today: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys basketball coach Bill Martin, 61, has announced his retirement after 10 seasons in charge.

"I always said I wanted to go out with the program in good shape, and I believe it is," Martin told The Daily Gazette. Martin’s final team lost to Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in the Section 2 Class A semifinals to finish 12-11 and leave his career mark at 121-104.

Martin was "old school" in several respects. He had a rule requiring a player for the remainder of the game following a technical foul. "There were some times where we had to take it on the chin, but in the long run, I believe it was all worth it," said Martin, who retired as a teacher seven years ago.

On the move: After 200 victories since 1995, seven Colonial Council titles and two sectional championships, Chris Bailey is leaving Schalmont to take the boys soccer job at Scotia-Glenville, The Times Union reported. Bailey has been an assistant wrestling coach at Scotia-Glenville for the past four years.

Honors: New York was well represented on the Parade All-American boys basketball team announced today. Kebma Walker of Rice, Lance Stevenson of Abraham Lincoln and Sylven Landesberg of Holy Cross all pulled

down second-team honors and Mount Vernon's Kevin Jones made the fourth team.

Culture shock: Cricket is making inroads as a sport for high-school athletes in New York City, The Associated Press reported this weekend — a reflection of the Caribbean and South Asia flavor.

The season opened Wednesday as Richmond Hill and Aviation High took the pitch. They're part of a two-league, 14-school program involving about 600 players.

The initiative is a way to reach out to immigrant teenagers, who can feel uncomfortable trying to pick up sports that their American counterparts have been playing for years, said John Aaron, secretary of the United States of America Cricket Association. "You can't shoot a basketball, you can be humiliated," he said.

Extra points: Track and field's Nike Web Nationals, one of the more entertaining "non-competition" competitions, is back for another season. The project from Nike and Dyestat.com pits teams against each other by comparing their best marks in the respective events over the course of the season. Regional and national team champions will be crowned.
