Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009: Coach of top-ranked Greece Athena/Odyssey hockey team resigns
Leading off today: Dan Webb has resigned as coach of the top-ranked boys ice hockey team at Greece Athena/Odyssey, the Democrat and Chronicle reported this morning.

The Greece Central School District gave no explanation of Webb's departure, and district spokesperson Laurel Heiden said the search for a replacement has started. An unidentified assistant coach also resigned.

The Thunder, ranked No. 1 in Division 1 by the New York State Sportswriters Association, is 19-0. Webb was in his ninth season as coach. Odyssey AD Joshua Lacy said that the team will play Greece Arcadia/Olympia as scheduled on Tuesday at Lakeshore Hockey Arena. The regular season ends Saturday vs. Hilton.

When contacted by the paper, Webb referred questions to the school district.

Shen wrestlers triumph: Austin Meys' third pin of the day, 46 seconds into the 189-pound final, broke a tie and sparked Shenendehowa to a 54-19 victory over Burnt Hills in the Section 2 Duals at Queensbury.

"Our guys worked real hard," Shenendehowa coach Rob Weeks told The Times Union. "It was real good competition today and a great finals. I guess the fans got what they paid for today."

Burnt Hills reached the final with a 38-33 win over Amsterdam in the semifinals.

Niagara-Wheatfield dominates: Niagara-Wheatfield won the Large School Team Championship at Cheektowaga for the fourth straight year.

The Falcons beat Iroquois, West Seneca East, Niagara Falls and Cheektowaga on their way to the title as Ricky Schweickhard (96 pounds), Angelo Malvestuto (171), Chris Wiseman (189) and James Donner (285) all went undefeated. Wiseman surprised Ken Hamilton of Niagara Falls, 8-7.

Cheektowaga’s Clay Reeb won all four of his matches at 160 pounds to set a school record of 170 career victories. Teammate Jared Messina won his first match to collect the 100th pin in his career.

Kearney fights off short-handed Lackawanna: Bishop Kearney, ranked No. 1 in Class B boys basketball, fought off Lackawanna for a 59-58 victory.

The Steelers -- playing without starters Dwayne Bennett, Capone Smith and Jerrold Williams -- entered the fourth quarter down by 54-41 and had two shots to win in the closing moments.

James Taylor scored 20 to lead Kearney. The Kings play at unbeaten Avon, ranked No. 1 in Class C, on Wednesday.

Knock off the nonsense: Kevin Gleason had a good read this morning in The Times Herald-Record regarding oafish fan behavior. He cited a couple of examples of fans crossing the line but also pointed out some aggressive steps to reel things in a bit.

At Kingston, students sign "contracts" saying they will cheer in a positive manner. Infractions cost the guilty party his pep club shirt, and yellow cards are given to fans acting up at games as a warning.
