Friday, Feb. 13, 2009: Franklinville’s Kopp sets Section 6 career scoring mark
Leading off today: Franklinville’s Samantha Kopp became Section 6's all-time girls basketball scoring leader last night, continuing her family's amazing run.

The 6-foot-3 senior scored 36 points for the Panthers in a 58-56 triumph over Randolph on senior night at Franklinville. She passed her cousin Joelle Connelly’s mark of 2,300 career points with a pair of free throws with two minutes left and now has 2,303 points. Her mother Laura ranks fourth in Section 6 with 2,196 points.

Kopp also had 20 rebounds and eight blocks in the victory.

Speaking of scoring: In Rochester, Freddie Thomas senior Nate Dukes quietly went over 2,000 career points late last month and now stands at 2,108 points. That places him fifth on the all-time Section 5 boys list.

On the verge: McQuaid's 5-1 ice hockey victory against Irondequoit on Wednesday was No. 299 for coach Al Vyverberg, in his 22nd season with the Knights. Former Irondequoit coach Al Maerz holds the Section 5 record with 303 wins.

McQuaid opens Section 5 tournament action on Feb. 21.

Calling all wrestling sources: NYSSWA wrestling editor Glen Irving is updating career records for New York high school coaches. He's looking for the records of anyone who has more than 200 victories.

   Send updates to Glen Irving.

Coaching changes: Former Pittsford Sutherland All-American Matthew McConnochie has been named varsity soccer coach at McQuaid. McConnochie coached the JVs there the past six seasons.

Nick Lombardo, an assistant under recently retired coach Richie Biancaniello for 14 years, was named head football coach at Lindenhurst. Lombardo was

an all-county quarterback at Lindenhurst in 1984.

Dunkirk has selected Tim Majka to take over as the football coach. The 1990 Dunkirk grad was an assistant for eight years at Pine Valley and two at his alma mater.

SFP suspends nine: Nine St. Francis Prep's girls basketball players have been suspended after their parents refused to allow them to board a bus to play a league game, AD Sal Fischetti told The Daily News.

The Terriers will play out the remainder of their schedule with four holdovers, team managers and possibly JV call-ups or other students.

The suspensions were handed down after the Terriers failed to show Tuesday for their game against Christ the King. Parents had petitioned the school to remove fifth-year coach JoAnn Wagner.

"It’s a shame that we got to this point,” Fischetti told FiveBoroSports.com. “I feel bad for all parties. Nothing good comes out of this.”

Getting out the vote: Dozens of Liverpool students have registered to vote on the Feb. 26 proposition for an $5.8 million renovation of the school's athletic facilities, The Post-Standard reported.

"We need to get this athletic field built because high school students are suffering, sports are suffering, the marching band is suffering and future Liverpool High School students will suffer if change doesn't happen," senior Jason Savlov, 18, told the paper.

District residents, including students, who are registered to vote will decide the fate of the renovation, which is not projected to raise school taxes. The proposal calls for new artificial turf, an eight-lane track and bleachers on the home sideline. Voters defeated two similar proposals last year.

The 10-year-old artificial turf stadium was declared unsafe in December 2007 because of problems with the field and track.
