Wednesday, May 13, 2009: Dundee sophomore slugs four triples, drives in nine runs
Leading off today: Dundee sophomore Kyle Spinks may have tied a national record yesterday by hitting four triples during a 20-13 baseball victory against Harley Allendale-Columbia.

Spinks finished 5-for-6, scored three times and drove in nine runs for the Scotsmen. In addition, he earned the win in relief on the mound.

The National Federation record book lists four instances of players hitting four triples in a game, all between 1956 and 2001. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association lists three instances of three three-baggers in a game.

Big round number alert: Corning East scored five third-quarter goals to pull away for a 14-8 boys lacrosse victory against Chenango Forks — the 700th triumph in the program's history.

The win was No. 497 for coach Bob Streeten.

Mitch Keefer scored five goals, assisted on two and went 15-for-23 on faceoffs. Matt Tobia scored four goals and Cody Lucas added a hat trick with three assists.

   Corning East's all-time record is 700-123 since 1967 — including 27-0 versus Chenango Forks.

Solvay finally falls: Westhill handed Solvay its first boys track and field loss in seven years and 59 meets with a 72-69 victory.

Tom Welch cleared 12 feet in the pole vault, the last event of the meet, gave the Warriors the clinching points in a tri-meet at Solvay on Tuesday. Westhill (8-0) also defeated Skaneateles (7-1), 71½-69½, en route to wrapping up the league championship.

Softball shorts: Buffalo McKinley’s Kara Edwards pitched a perfect game — her third no-hitter in a row — to beat South Park in the first game of a doubleheader.

On Monday, junior Jessie Winans hit her 10th home run of the season as Afton downed Hancock, 11-1. Winans has been selected Daily Star Player of the Year three straight years.

Iona Prep middie recovering: Iona Prep senior midfielder Brendan Grogan is recovering at Westchester Medical Center after suffering a broken vertebra last week during a win over Fordham Prep, The Journal News reported.

Grogan is wearing a halo brace and is expected to make a full recovery from a fractured C1 vertebra suffered while attempting to check a Fordham Prep player. He ran off the field under his own power.

Coach suspended: Staten Island Academy girls lacrosse coach Joe Paone has been suspended by the school for his alleged "inappropriate interaction" with a 17-year-old female student, The Advance reported.

Paone also coaches girls varsity volleyball and JV basketball.

According to the paper, the alleged relationship was discovered when a girl began talking about a boyfriend named "Joe." A classmate used the girl's phone and allegedly discovered that Paone was the person the student was talking and texting with.

A spokesman for Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan said Paone's alleged actions "would not necessarily constitute a crime, however, if the female student was at least 17 years old."

Ripping Lance, chapter 38: So I was out riding my Segway, while listening to my Microsoft Zune and making calls on my Iridium phone network when I realized it had been a week or so since I checked on on that other great underachievement of the last decade: Lance Stephenson's college search.

My search for new nuggets of information took me to CBSSports.com, where senior writer Garry Parrish summed up the Abraham Lincoln guard's inability to seal a deal with a Division I suitor thusly:

"Lance Stephenson is like a supermodel with herpes."

Parrish goes into a certain degree of depth regarding why colleges are reluctant to bring Stephenson aboard even though he's a consensus top 10 national player. You can read his take here.
