Wednesday, May 20, 2009: West Genesee girls avenge lacrosse loss to Baldwinsville, 10-7
Leading off today: Six weeks after suffering its first loss in three years, the West Genesee girls lacrosse team got revenge against Baldwinsville yesterday.

The Wildcats, two-time defending state Class A champions, rode Morgan Corso's hat trick to a 10-7 victory. Baldwinsville entered the game No. 1 and West Genny No. 2 in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association Class A rankings.

Senior goalie Nicole Greco made 14 saves in a game in which the Wildcats never trailed.

"Our defense is much better than the first time we faced them," Wildcats coach Bob Elmer told The Post-Standard after picking up career victory No. 200. "They are a very good team, they have some very good players."

Bridgehampton safe for now: Voters in Bridgehampton defeated school board challengers running on a platform of allowing the school district to phase out the tiny high school and pay tuition to send students to neighboring schools.

Ronald White, Lillian Tyree and Douglas De Groot won three-year seats on the seven-member board. Three challengers who supported phasing out the high school all lost, as did incumbent James Walker, who supported saving the school. According to Newsday, incumbent Joseph Berhalter, who was not up for re-election, supports dissolving the high school.

Bridgehampton's tradition-rich boys basketball team has won eight New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships over the years, tied with Mount Vernon for the all-time high.

Board candidates against closing the school said the

"I think it's a central part of the community," boys basketball coach Carl Johnson told the paper.

NYSSWA member triumphs: Longtime New York State Sportswriters Association member Steve Grandin scored a victory yesterday.

Grandin, who's compiled massive volumes of football data and other statistics in Section 2 and for the NYSSWA over the years, won election to the Saratoga Springs City School District Board of Education. One of three candidates running for three seats, Grandin was the top vote-getter.

Another adjournment for Lance: Abraham Lincoln star senior guard Lance Stephenson and teammate Darwin Ellis will have to wait until at least June 29 to learn the outcome of their sexual assault case.

The case was adjourned until then by Judge Alexander Jeong in Brooklyn Criminal Court, The Daily News reported.

Stephenson's attorney, Alberto Ebanks, continues to maintain his client is innocent and speculated the case could be resolved via a dismissal or plea bargain. Stephenson, accompanied by his parents, declined comment outside court.

Stephenson and Ellis were charged with allegedly groping a female student, 17, outside school on Oct. 3.
