Monday, June 8, 2009: Commack junior Lee wins NYSPHSAA girls golf title
Leading off today: Commack junior Suzie Lee began the day six strokes down but shot a second-round 73 to finish at 148 and win the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls golf championship by one shot at Foxfire Golf Club in Baldwinsville yesterday.

Anna Austano of Wappingers was second at 5-over-par 149, a shot ahead of Ithaca junior Rebecca Studin, who followed her career-best, 3-under 69 with an 81 that began with a bogey and a triple-bogey.

"I definitely went in today thinking a 76 or 75 would win it," Studin told The Press & Sun-Bulletin. "Turns out I would have won with a 78. I was a little bit unhappy."

Led by Lee, Section 11 won the team competition by 40 shots over Section 5 (1,164).

Federation golf: Brewster junior Mike Miller fired a 1-under 71 at Mark Twain Golf Club in Elmira to win his second boys Federation golf championship in three years.

Miller bogeyed Nos. 15 and 16 but birdied 17, which proved to be the margin over Bryce Edmister of Webster Schroeder.

"When I won this two years ago, I didn't realize how big the tournament was," Miller told The Journal News "I figured out how big it was last year, so it's really nice to win it."

Miller tied for third at the NYSPHSAA championships last week in Ithaca for a second straight year.

Whitesboro names AD: Fifth-year Oriskany schools superintendent Mike Deuel is returning as athletic director at Whitesboro High, a position he held for two years in the late 1990s.

Deuel, who has daughters in the sixth and eighth grades

"Being superintendent is a great position, but it takes a lot of time," Deuel told The Observer-Dispatch. "My family right now is at the point where they are getting into middle school and high school. I want to make sure I have time for them."

Deuel began his teaching career at Oriskany in 1984 and coached boys basketball, track, modified football and softball before becoming AD in 1991. He served in that position at Whitesboro from 1997 to 1999 before returning to Oriskany as the high school principal.

Summer lacrosse event: With the Empire State Games sent to the sidelines this summer by budget woes, there's a new top-notch boys lacrosse event on the schedule in July.

The New York Shootout, sponsored by Nike, will be held July 25 at Syracuse's Henninger High. It will bring together eight regional teams from around the state for a one-day event. Teams will be from Buffalo (Section 6), Rochester (5), Syracuse (3), the Southern Tier (4), Albany/St. Lawrence (2, 10), Hudson Valley (1, 9), Nassau (8) and Suffolk (11).

The announcement was made by Nike and NYSPHSAA boys lacrosse chairman Tom Hall.

The regional teams will hold tryouts for players who have recently completed grades 9, 10 or 11.
