Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010: West Seneca East's Kumro hits for nine three-pointers
Leading off today: It was raining threes at Williamsville East last night.

Jordan Kumro set West Seneca East records for three-point baskets in a quarter (six in the first) and a game (nine) to highlight a 59-56 victory. He finished with a career-high 31 points.

Zak Rambuss' three-point play with 19 seconds left broke a 56-56 tie for the Trojans. The Flames missed two three-pointers in the closing seconds.

"I've been coaching varsity basketball for 11 years, he's the best jump shooter I've ever coached," WSE coach Jason Kline said of Kumro. "He just has tremendous range."

Newark wins at BK: Newark, ranked 11th in Class A, picked up a quality road victory with a 62-51 triumph over No. 21 Bishop Kearney, which was playing its first home game of the season.

Senior Javon McCrea led the Reds with 21 points in their first game since a double-OT loss at Jamestown last week. Newark broke open a tie game by going on a 20-10 run in the third quarter.

Roderick Gray scored 28 points for Kearney, the 2009 state Class B champion. The Kings are 5-4 heading into their rematch with No. 1 Jamesville-DeWitt at the Utica Notre Dame tournament.

Split decision for Boys & Girls: Kangaroos forward Leroy Fludd won his eligiblity appeal, but his grades will keep him out of the Boys & Girls basketball lineup the end of the month according to New York City newspaper reports.

The 6-foot-5 transfer from Grady was ruled ineligible for the season by the PSAL on Dec. 2 because of the league’s transfer-eligibility rules. The appeal was head Dec. 19 and granted yesterday, and his first game back could be Feb. 1 vs. Abraham Lincoln.

Fludd had indicated the transfer over the summer was motivated by his concern that Grady Where he averaged 15 points and 13 boards last winter as a freshman) might not field a team this season following the loss of its third coach in three seasons, The New York Post reported.

While that might sound dubious, it was at least as plausible as some of the "dog ate my homework" excuses for transfers that have been approved in New York in recent seasons.

Speaking of transfers: Newburgh Free Academy owes little of its success this season -- including a No. 2 ranking in Class AA -- to 5-foot-11 Devon McMillan. That could change in a hurry though.

McMillan, senior guard headed to Hofstra, made his season debut Tuesday with four points, four assists and three rebounds in barely a quarter of action. NFA downed Warwick 87-46.

NFA won the state Class AA championship last season (beating McMillan's Uniondale squad along the way) and returned all five starters.

"He seemed to be very unselfish," Warwick coach Tom Folino told The Times Herald-Record. "If the chemistry stays the way it should with them, he's going to make them a much better team."

As a Uniondale junior, McMillan averaged 12.9 points and 11.1 rebounds following his transfer from Abraham Lincoln.

By the way: My blogging will likely become a bit less frequent for at least the next few weeks. I'm picking up a few extra shifts at my "real job" to fill some holes in the schedule, which will cut into the time I'm able to devote to this site.

The site's other features, including weekly rankings, should remain unaffected.
