   Records: Both teams are 12-0.

Rankings: Hornell is ranked No. 1 and Schalmont No. 2 by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Coaches: Joe Whipple (Schalmont) and Gene Mastin (Hornell).

Digging inside the schedules: It's tough to determine what's more amazing, that Hornell outscored its foes 563-126 or that a third of the points allowed came against the long-struggling Batavia program early in sectionals.

Section 5's scheduling format -- based on traditional league set-ups rather than a class-based federation format -- does not serve Hornell well in terms of playoff preparation, but it's hard to argue with wins by sores of 24-0 against East Rochester and 67-0 over Midlakes in the final two rounds of sectionals.

Schalmont outscored its opponents 477-82, and the midseason win over Hudson Falls by a 13-6 score was the only contest decided by less than 13 points. The Sabres posted three shutouts, and defense is generally considered their strong suit despite the impressive scoring output.

About Schalmont: Last year's 9-3 season (they started 0-2) ended with a 28-7 loss to the Nanuet squad that Hornell edged 16-14 a week later.

Schalmont senior quarterback QB Joe Paskevich has thrown for over 1,000 yards as the replacement for Vince Gallo, who ran for 2,400 yards a year ago as a senior. Second-year coach Joe Whipple brought the spread offense with him from Bishop Gibbons, and the air route is the better option against Hornell.

Two-way starter Mike Floccuzio began the season with some big numbers at running back (where he was selected all-league) but was moved to tight end at midseason to shore up the blocking and protection. Likewise, junior Alex Hildebrand converted from RB to the line in addition to his defensive duties at linebacker, where he has two pick-sixes and three interceptions overall.

Other key players are running back Jaren Ramundo (Section 2 Class B West Division player of the year), defensive end Dalton Tulipe and linebacker J.J. Murphy, all seniors.

About Hornell: The Red Raiders have won 25 in a row for the state's longest active winning streak.

The Hornell team you may recall from a year ago -- Austin Dwyer left, Austin Dwyer right, Austin Dwyer up the middle -- no longer exists. Dwyer is in college and the Red Raiders have diversified as junior quarterback Dominic Scavo has been entrusted to throw with greater frequency. Though he was picked off twice last weekend in a 45-12 victory against Chenango Valley in the semifinals, Scavo is 14-for-28 for 155 yards and three TD passes in the state tournament and

73-for-114 for 1,191 yards for the year.

The threat of him going up top makes space for Sam Stonerock (173 attempts, 1,739 yards, 25 TDs), who ran 18 times for 236 yards and four TDs vs. Chenango Valley. Stonerock also led Hornell on defense with seven tackles and is ably assisted on offense by junior Scott McKibben (108 carries, 1,044 yards).

Hornell turned the ball over just six times in its first 11 games but three times last week.

Past championships: Schalmont is appearing in its first NYSPHSAA final. Hornell is the defending Class B champion.

Making a pick: This one really could go either way. Schalmont is a program on the rise and earned some valuable postseason experience in each of Whipple's two seasons, but there's always the risk of getting caught up in the awe of the Carrier Dome the first time there.

Hornell is a better team offensively than the '09 title squad, but the defense is a tad more vulnerable. Still, Alden and Chenango Valley combined for just 315 yards of total offense in the last two weeks.

I've wrestled with this all week and haven't convinced myself yet that this is the way I want to go, but the deadline has arrived: Schalmont 22, Hornell 20.
