Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011: All-state small-school football teams announced
Leading off today: Two-way standout Sam Stonerock has been selected the state's Class B player of the year after capping his football career with 26 straight victories and back-to-back state championships at the Carrier Dome.

The announcement came today from the New York State Sportswriters Association, which released its all-state and player of the year selections in Classes B, C and D.

Stonerock was a standout senior linebacker and running back for the Red Raiders. Joining him on the player of the year list are Stephen Shoemaker, a two-way lineman for Bronxville (Class C), and Jarrett Sommer, Tuckahoe's record-setting running back (Class D).

The all-state squads in Classes AA and A as well as the players of the year will be announced next Wednesday.

MRSA scare at Granville: A Granville wrestler has tested positive for MRSA, resulting in the school postponing all athletic events yesterday, The Post-Star reported. MRSA is a type of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria normally carried on the skin and in the nose of healthy people.

The Golden Horde’s wrestling match against Tamarac scheduled for tomorrow has been pushed back to Jan. 20 in what coach Steve Palmer termed a precautionary move; the school and athletic facilities at Granville were given a thorough cleaning yesterday, the paper reported.

Palmer was uncertain if the wrestling team would compete in Saturday’s Greg Rockwood Memorial Tournament at Galway. “I feel it’s an isolated incident, but you’ve got to take precautions,” he told the paper.

Palmer said the affected wrestler had “some scrapes” on his forehead at last week’s two-day tournament in Middlebury, Vt. That wrestler and several teammates have consulted with doctors this week.

In a statement released by the district, Superintendent Mark Bessen said Granville staff has worked in conjunction with the Washington County Health Department. He said a fact sheet explaining MRSA and the need for good hygiene practices will be sent home with athletes.

sixth man Anthony Hemingway in time for yesterday's game, but the Kangaroos still fell to Thomas Jefferson 70-56.

Slaughter and Hemingway had been benched for five games for academic issues. Slaughter returned with a team high 13 points vs. Jefferson for Boys & Girls, which capped a span of five games in six days with a win Sunday in Philadelphia.

"We didn't do a lot of the things we usually do," 'Roos coach Ruth Lovelace told The New York Post. "That's a sign of maybe we were tired. Our pressure wasn't what it normally is. They got to a lot of loose balls. We took some quick shots. When you look at all of that, it adds up to the loss."

Houston goes for 49: Pearl River's Luke Houston scored 49 points, making 6 of 11 three-pointers as the Pirates scored a 75-68 win over visiting Spring Valley in two overtimes.

Houston was 12-for-26 from the field and 19-for-23 on free throws. He scored 16 in the fourth quarter to erase a 46-38 deficit. Houston scored all eight of Pearl Rivers points in the first OT and eight more in the second.

Recent Long Island Lutheran transfer Terry Brutus scored 28 points for Spring Valley in a losing cause.
