Leading off today: New York will be well represented Friday in one of the great events in all of high school sports: the invitational miles at the Millrose Games.
Greene senior Chad Noelle locked down his invitation with an impressive victory yesterday, clocking 4:11.64 at the 10th annual New Balance Games at the Armory Track & Field Center. Race runner-up Jeremy Elkaim (4:15.05) of Livingston, N.J., was also awarded one of the 10 berths in the boys field.
Warwick Valley senior Tim Luther, Westbury senior Owen Skeete, Chaminade junior Tommy Awad and Liverpool junior Zavon Watkins were also extended invitations to run on the fabled boards at Madison Square Garden.
Four New York girls also qualified: Ward Melville senior Mary Kate Anselmini and juniors Samantha Nadel of North Shore, Rachel Paul of Sachem East and Kelsey Margey of Harborfields.
More New Balance news: Virtually any meet at The Armory is guaranteed to be a good one, and New Balance is typically among the hottest of the hot.
Running the boys' 500 meters against top-shelf competition for the first time, St. Peter's (N.J.) Prep junior Najee Glass broke a 27-year-old record U.S. scholastic record with a 1:02.22 clocking. Second-place finisher Srymar Livingston from Christopher Columbus had to settle for the state record of 1:02.88.
Livingston capped his day with a 1:52.1 anchor to rally Columbus from fourth to first in 3:32.25 after a teammate dropped the stick on the third leg.
Livingston missed the 2010 outdoor season for disciplinary reasons but has been tearing it up in the long sprints this winter.
“I wanted to get back to my aggressiveness,” Livingston told The New York Post. “When I got kicked off my team everything was falling. When that happened my confidence just dropped. My coach told me that everything happens for a reason and just go out there and run my race and be as aggressive as I used to be.”
Milestone: Pawling senior Margo Hackett scored the 2,000th point of her career early in the fourth quarter of a 73-42 loss to Haldane.
Hackett finished with 24 points in the game, boosting her career total to 2,011.
"It's pretty neat as a dad and it's exciting as a coach to have anybody on your team who's capable of doing this," said Jeff Hackett, Margo's father and coach. "It's the culmination of a lot of hard work on her part."
Fulton, again: Pins by David Hall (145 pounds), Tony Torrese (160) and Nick Muckey (171) lifted Fulton to an early lead and a 38-27 victory over previously unbeaten Indian River in the finals of the Section 3 dual meet wrestling tournament.
It was the 18th time in the event's 23-year history that Fulton finished first in the 16-team meet.
Indian River closed the deficit to 28-24; a decision by Adam Wallace in the 135 match wrapped up the meet for Fulton.
