Friday, Feb. 27, 2009: Liverpool residents approve stadium fixes at high school
Leading off today: One step forward and two steps back. That's the state of progress in the Syracuse area these days in the area of athletic facilities.

On the plus side, Liverpool voters yesterday approved a proposition to renovate the high school stadium and install new artificial turf after twice rejecting similar proposals last year. The $5.8 million undertaking was OK'd by a margin of 3,684 to 1,474, with a handful of absentee ballots yet to be counted, The Post-Standard reported.

"This is a great outcome," Superintendent Jan Matousek said. "I'm glad we can move on and get our turf and track back on line and get our kids home."

The 10-year-old artificial turf stadium was declared unsafe in December 2007 after the field's surface bubbled because of problems with the base, school officials said.

The football team had to play home games at nearby schools last fall, and the lacrosse team will do likewise for the second straight year. Construction is expected to begin in October and take up to a year to complete.

Meanwhile, Section 3 still doesn't have a viable solution for the loss of Manley Field House, which Syracuse University is converting into a practice facility for its football and lacrosse teams.

Tonight's Section 3 state qualifier is the last indoor high school track meet scheduled for the facility, displacing approximately 1,500 athletes from 60 schools beginning next season. Section 3 official John Rathbun says a committee is exploring options, but Cortland State, Hamilton College, and Colgate are distant locations for many districts that are increasingly conscious of the cost of transporting teams to faraway events.

Lourdes is out: Our Lady of Lourdes, ranked 13th by the NYSSWA, dropped a 72-61 decision to Ossining in the Section 1 Class AA girls basketball semifinals at the Westchester County Center.

  •    "They just kicked our butts," Lourdes coach Sarah Mesuch told The Poughkeepsie Journal after her team scored just 12 points each in the third and fourth quarters. "Our rebounding wasn't there. We didn't get our (defensive) rotations that we had been getting."

Lourdes committed seven fouls in the first quarter, putting Ossining in the bonus for the rest of the first half. For the game, Ossining made 34 of the 47 free throws compared to Lourdes' 7-for-13 total; Alex Venuto (27 points), for example was 10-for-13 from the line and teammate Hayley Awerdick went 14-for-20.

Drug sweep nets former star: A sweep involving an estimated 300 local police and FBI agents in the Buffalo area netted more than 30 arrests, including former schoolboy star Damone Brown, accused of money-laundering. Brown went on to play for Syracuse University and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Brown, who had been playing for a team in Reno, Nev., and two other defendants are accused of using a safe deposit box to hold about $170,000 in drug money, The Buffalo News reported. The money was seized by federal agents Dec. 11.

Extra points: SUNY Stony Brook running back Edwin Gowins out of Bellport has been named freshman player of the year in the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) by College Sporting News. Gowins, previously named first-team all-Big South, ran for 1,310 yards in 11 games, including a 278-yard day against Iona to set a league record.

Marty Keating, the Livonia boys and Pittsford girls swimming coach, has been named the recipient of the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association's Outstanding Service Award. Keating, who has been the New York State Swim Coaches Association president for 37 years, will receive the award on March 28 in College Station, Texas.
