Leading off today: Queensbury boys lacrosse captain and scoring leader Jeremiah Ellement was suspended yesterday for the rest of the season after the school district learned he hid a mid-March arrest for marijuana possession from school officials,
The Post-Star reported.
Making the situation especially awkward is the fact that Ellement's father is the team's coach and that neither he nor Principal Michael Patton and AD Scott Stuart were aware of the arrest until a reporter called them about the matter on Wednesday.
"As a parent and a coach, he was just mortified," Patton said of Keith Ellement's reaction. "The parents were upset and had no idea this had happened."
Jeremiah Ellement, an 18-year-old senior on the 9-3 lacrosse squad, and track athlete Shaun Hazlitt, 18, were arrested March 17 and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a noncriminal violation, according to the paper. Former football player James Drexel, 18, was also charged.
The arrests came after Trooper Brian Rumrill pulled over a car driven by Hazlitt in the town of Lake George for speeding, and the trooper smelled marijuana, the paper said.
Keith Ellement told the paper via e-mail that his son hired a lawyer and went to court without his parents' knowledge. Under state law, persons over 16 are prosecuted as adults and police or court officials are not required to notify parents of arrests.
The students entered plea agreements on April 9 in which charges would be dropped in six months if they remained out of trouble and completed the Warren County Youth Court program for young offenders. The paper said that program requires parental consent for participation, but that would not necessarily be obtained until a later date.
