Sunday, July 5, 2009: Poughkeepsie's Frank will play football for UConn
Leading off today: Poughkeepsie two-way starter Reuben Frank will continue his football career at UConn in the fall of 2010, The Poughkeepise Journal reported over the weekend.

Frank, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive end/linebacker gave the Huskies a non-binding commitment and can sign a letter of intent and scholarship papers in February. UConn is coached by Randy Edsall.

"He's grown up so much, so fast," Poughkeepsie coach Ken Barger said of Frank. "He started football in ninth grade and he's really come a long way in a short time."

Frank, who also had offers from Buffalo and Syracuse, made 92 tackles last fall and caught four passes for 103 yards.

All-state baseball team: Six seniors have been selected players of the year for the recently concluded baseball season, the New York State Sportswriters Association announced over the weekend.

The players are Ward Melville pitcher/first baseman Steve Matz (Class AA), Aquinas second baseman Ben Bostick (A), Class B co-recipients J.J. Franco of Poly Prep and Kyle Hansen of St. Dominic's, Maple Hill pitcher/shortstop Jaime Schultz (Class C) and Arkport pitcher/shortstop Shawn Kerr (Class D).

Mike Chiapparelli of Mamaroneck was selected coach of the year in Class A for the second straight season. The other coaches of the year are Mark Magliocco (Aquinas, Class A), Matt Roventini (Poly Prep, B), Rico Frese (Maple Hill, C) and Joe LePage (Hamilton, D).

The full list of all-state selections from NYSSCOGS, the sister organization of the New York State Sportswriters Association, can be found here.

Crash kills Walton standout: Walton High three-sport athlete Cody Endress, a recent graduate of the school, died early Thursday in a one-car crash, The Press & Sun-Bulletin reported.

Endress, 18, played football, basketball and baseball. He was a three-year starter in football and part of the 2007 state championship team as the tight end. He earned all-

star honors in football and baseball as a senior.

"He was a great kid," baseball coach Gary Backus told the paper. "He was very quiet, unassuming, but he was a great teammate. He was very unselfish, he was a consummate team player."

Volleyball switch in the works: Section 7's Champlain Valley Athletic Conference is likely to switch girls volleyball from the winter to fall beginning in 2010 and take part in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament.

The Press-Republican reported that league ADs have approved the measure and are awaiting an OK by the Section 7 Athletic Council in August.

Sections 3, 4 and 7 have conducted regional playoffs following the winter season in recent years.

A season switch would also open up opportunities for a wider varity of regular-season competition for Section 7 schools, currently hampered by long bus trips to Central New York during the winter.
