Monday, July 6, 2009: Charges against two Wilson baseball coaches dropped
Leading off today: Child endangerment charges were dismissed today against two Wilson Central baseball coaches in connection with an alleged April 2008 hazing incident, The Buffalo News reported.

A jury was to have been selected for the trial of William M. Atlas and Thomas J. Baia this morning, but Assistant District Attorney Robert A. Zucco moved for a dismissal, which Town Justice George R. Berger granted.

Charges of forcible touching and hazing against two 17-year-old Wilson baseball players were heard last week in a closed-door trial. Berger is still considering his verdict in that non-jury trial.

Herbert L. Greenman, attorney for Atlas, commended DA Michael J. Violante for dismissing the charges, which led to the coaches being suspended by the school district.

The coaches did not comment to the media this morning. A public relations firm announced the coaches will appear at a "press conference and celebration" on Wednesday to discuss the case.

All-state gridder dies in crash: Adam Wright, a second-team all-state running back for Charles G. Finney School in 2006, died following a three-vehicle crash Sunday near Rochester that also seriously injured two other men. Three others suffered minor injuries.

Wright, 20, helped Finney reach the Section 5 Class D final as a senior. He rushed for 1,464 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior. He finished his career with 4,294 yards, which was the No. 4 total in Section 5 hictory at the time.

Wright continued his career at Iona College as a freshman but had recently transferred to St. John Fisher College, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

Girls hockey league a step closer: A committee of Buffalo-area ADs has recommended that a regional girls varsity ice hockey league be launched in the 2010-11 school year, The Buffalo News reported.

Though an estimated 900 girls ages 18 and under play hockey in Western New York yoth leagues, Nichols is the only school in the area that sponsors a girls team. A handful of girls have played on boys teams in recent years.

Niagara-Wheatfield, West Seneca, Lancaster, Orchard Park and the Monsignor Martin Association have been meeting since December to study the possible formation of a league.

Williamsville and the Monsignor Martin Association have committed to fielding teams in 2010-11; the committee says a miniumum of five teams would be needed to launch a league. The committee estimates the cost of sponsoring a team to be $24,500 a year.

Williamsville AD James Rusin said cost-cutting measures enacted last winter by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association in light of a massive state budget deficit threw a wrinkle into the process, as districts may be reluctant to add new sports a time when they are cutting spending on established programs.

Rusin said he is "cautiously optimistic" that enough districts will commit to make a league possible, especially if two or more districts combine to field a single team as a first step toward establishing their own programs.

Extra points: A very early version of the list of 2009 football scrimmages has been posted to the site. I have a slew of Long Island scrimmages that I'll add to the list as time allows this week. . . . NYSSWA girls cross country editor Dan Doherty has pulled together a 2009 preview of top teams and returning all-staters for TullyRunners.com. He projects Fayetteville-Manlius (three-time defending Nike Cross Nationals champion), Saratoga and Shenendehowa to lead the top 10 teams this fall.
