Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009: FiveBoroSports.com crew moves over to New York Post
Leading off today: The meteoric rise is complete for a group of online innovators in New York City.

A year after starting a Web site that thoroughly covered the under-served high school market in The Big Apple, the founders of FiveBoroSports.com have closed up shop and moved over to The New York Post to beef up scholastic sports coverage on the paper's just-redesigned site.

Zach Braziller, Marc Raimondi, Dylan Butler and Joseph Staszewski officially made the move to The Post this weekend after finalizing their deal late last month. The site is already promoting their blogs, Twitter pages and rankings.

It's a significant move by the paper because The Advance in Staten Island has been the only NYC daily that consistently goes beyond the marquee matchups in major sports and Big East-driven recruiting news. Going after younger readers via high school sports coverage will likely force The Daily News and electronic media to become more aggressive, and I'm already hearing chatter about competitors gearing up.

(Full disclosure: News Corp. owns both The New York Post and FOXSports.com, a Web site for which I work part-time.)

Somers' Schurr picks JHU: There are those of us among the male of the species who are incapable of committing to anything beyond making lunch plans.

   And then there's Eddie Schurr.

Five days into his junior year at Somers, the standout defenseman has given an oral commitment to play lacrosse for Johns Hopkins.

“Well, I didn’t really plan on it coming this quickly,” he told LaxLessons.com. "It’s kind of the way things happened. I realize I was ready to commit. The recruiting process started before Sept. 1 for me. I had plenty of time to think about it."

Schurr said he heard from close to 10 Division I schools this month, and LaxLessons.com reports John Jay attackman Mike Daniello has been swamped with pitches from more than 30 D-I programs.

Swimmers heading to Europe: USA Swimming announced Wednesday that Long Island standouts Jack Wagner (Holy Trinity) and Emily Kelly (Sacred Heart) have been selected to the National Youth World Cup Team that will compete at the FINA World Cup events in Stockholm and Berlin in November, Newsday reported.

Kelly is the two-time defending Federation champion in the 500-yard freestyle. Wagner has set state records in the 200 IM and 100 freestyle.

Harriers hit the trails: Arlington swept cross country team titles at the Washingtonville Invitational yesterday.

The girls placed seven runners in the first 10 to accumulate 20 points and easily top Cornwall (60). Hayley McMahon covered the three-mile course in 18:48.6 to take individual honors.

The boys held off Washingtonville 42-68.

Farewell tour kicks off: Arlington kicked off boys soccer coach Gary Montalto's 33rd season with a 7-0 victory over Valley Central. Cody Farrier assisted on the first goal and then scored two of the next three, Ryan Purdy also scored twice.

Montalto has already announced he will be retiring at the end of the season, The Journal News reported. The Section 1 soccer coordinator has turned over administrative duties to ADs Chris Fiore of Eastchester and Kate Palumbo of the Wappingers Central School District.

More soccer: The Erie County Interscholastic Conference defeated the Niagara Frontier League 12-8 to win the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer ECIC/NFL Boys Soccer Challenge at Sweet Home. The ECIC had a 5-3-2 record in the two-day fundraiser to honor longtime official Tom Mingle, who died of cancer a year ago.

What's a good AD cost? New Whitesboro athletic director Michael Deuel is earning nearly 30 percent more than predecessor Mark Lybolt made a year ago, The Observer-Dispatch reported.

Deuel will earn $98,000 compared to Lybolt's $75,712, the paper learned through a Freedom of Information Law request.

Whitesboro Superintendent David Langone cites Deuel’s administrative experience as a former superintendent, AD and principal as factors in the higher salary. He will also oversee the district’s health curriculum, which was not part of Lybolt's duties.

The salary has become as issue in light of a $53.2 million budget for the new school year that cut a number of reading, music, art and business teachers.

"I think in the long run we’ll save at least that $20,000 from him running and managing the programs,” Whitesboro Board of Education President Philip Russo Russo said. "He has a broader perspective and a number of skills that his predecessor did not have."

Langone said that some school board members had thought Deuel’s salary should be higher.

"We came up with closer to $120,000,” Langone told the paper. “We just didn’t feel with the economy the way that it was, that we would be able to approach that number."
