Friday, Jan. 22, 2010: All Hallows snaps Mount Vernon home streak
Leading off today: Jeff Tolentino made a three-pointer as time expired yesterday to give All Hallows a 60-59 victory over Mount Vernon, which lost at home boys basketball game for the first time since Feb. 2, 1998.

Mount Vernon had won 108 straight games at home since losing to Archbishop Stepinac 91-87.

All Hallows led with 21 seconds left when Adam Melheur hit a 3-pointer for the lead. All Hallows got a rebound off a Mount Vernon missed free throw with eight seconds left and found Tolentino.

Jabarie Hinds scored 32 points, including eight three-pointers for Mount Vernon, which led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter.

Honor roll: Honeoye Falls-Lima senior Alex Deir and Cornwall junior Aisling Cuffe have been selected Gatorade's New York cross country runners of the year.

Deir won NYSPHSAA Class B championships as a sophomore and a senior, finishing second in 2008. He led HF-L to the state team championship last fall at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Cuffe won the state NYSPHSAA Class A title and the Federation crown and was unbeaten until placing fourth at the Footlocker Nationals in San Diego.

Tough bunch: Candor's 54-43 victory over Newfield on Tuesday was no ordinary girls basketball triumph.

The Indians showed up with just five players but still

walked away with their second straight bare-bones-lineup victory. Kendra Wagstaff scored 13 points in the first half and 15 in the game as Candor improved to 6-6 -- and was even bold enough to apply a press that created 25 turnovers.

"For the second game in a row, the kids really stepped up," Candor coach Norm Szwec told The Ithaca Journal. "It was just a phenomenal team effort."

The Indians had been playing with seven girls before losing Chelsy Kern to a sprained ankle and Jordan Hollenbeck to a concussion. That left them with Wagstaff, Taylor Szwec, Becca Smith, Courtney Switzer and Amanda Kellogg.

Last Friday, Candor beat Spencer-Van Etten 45-39.

"The girls have just come together so much," Szwec said. "If somebody makes a mistake or makes a turnover, the other girls slap her on the back and say 'Hey, forget it let's move on.'"

Homestretch for recruiting: Syracuse Nottingham quarterback Jawan Simmons has attracted a lot of recent attention from Maryland but it sounds as though the Terps would prefer to hold off committing a scholarship until they've exhausted some other options. . . . Rush-Henrietta QB Ashton Broyld got face time with Coach Greg Schiano at junior day at Rutgers this month but heard the same message that other schools have been sending: His future is somewhere other than quarterback. Lots of time left, so don't rule out the possibility of him getting a chance somewhere.
