Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015: The 2014-15 New York school year in review (con't)

[ Continued from Page 7 ]

A month earlier, Beaver River won Class D at the NYSPHSAA cross country championships. In pulling down their first title since 2008, the Beavers earned their 15th championship in the history of the meet and tied West Genesee lacrosse for the most NYSPHSAA first-place trophies in any boys sport.

In girls lacrosse, Penn Yan teammates Courtney Lafler and Heather Conklin reached an identical milestone -- 200 career goals -- in the same Section 5 tournament game.

In boys lacrosse, Minisink Valley senior Joe Sessa surpassed 500 points for his career.

As far as debuts go, good luck topping what Jamesville-DeWitt sophomore Gavin French did in his first varsity baseball at-bat.

French took a big cut at a 1-0 pitch, sending the ball over the center-field fence for a grand slam during a win over Oswego.

"I was just thinking, don't strike out," he said.

Buffalo City Honors junior Molly Petrucci reached the 200-goal mark in girls soccer. In the same game, teammate Jenna Szopinski climbed to 47 for the season, two more than the NYSPHSAA mark of 45 by Fillmore's Jo Anna Beardsley in 1999.

Utica Notre Dame quarterback Kevin Warmack scored a Section 3-record eight touchdowns while rolling up 405 rushing yards as the Jugglers scored a 52-40 win over General Brown in the sectional Class C semifinals.

Tommy Dutton of Rocky Point broke his brother Stephen's Long Island record of 227 career wrestling victories.

Exiting the scene too soon
Rawle Alkins made the decision to Christ the King in July when it became apparent the CHSAA was unlikely to grant him a fourth season of eligibility. Alkins, a first-team all-state player and one of the most coveted guards in the country, led the Royals to three CHSAA basketball championships and two Federation crowns.

Streaks
A pair of NYSPHSAA champions ended the fall season on winning streaks spanning more than 50 games.

Lakeland's 3-1 win over Garden City in the NYSPHSAA field hockey Class B final was No. 52 in a row and marked the Hornets' sixth straight crown.

In football, Maine-Endwell built a big lead and then fended off Schalmont 27-19 for the NYSPHSAA Class B championship and win No. 51 in a run of four consecutive state crowns.

West Genesee defeated Fayetteville-Manlius 4-3 in the season's first week, snapping a national-record 329-match winning streak in girls tennis that began in 1993. F-M had lost only twice since 1984 under coach Phil Rudolph, 421-7 in 30 seasons.

Ursuline girls swimming stretched its win streak to 100 duals with an 89-73 win vs. Bronxville/Tuckahoe. The run ended at 101 following a 96-82 loss to Clarkstown.

With the fifth-place runners from each team diving across the finish line, Onondaga pulled out a 27-28 win over Tully in boys cross country, handing the Black Knights their first dual-meet loss since 1994 -- a string of 142 meets.

After 14 seasons and 195 matches without a loss, the Ward Melville girls fencing team finally fell at the hands of Commack by a 14-13 score during a January tussle.

Fayetteville-Manlius, ranked No. 1 in the largest girls

state cross country ratings by the NYSSWA 82 straight weeks dating to November 2006, finally (and briefly) ceded the top shot following a loss to Elmira at the McQuaid Invitational.

Lake George, Scotia-Glenville and Shenendehowa repped Section 2 by winning NYSPHSAA boys basketball championships in Glens Falls, improving the Capital District's record in finals since 2013 to an amazing 9-0. Making that stat even more amazing, Section 2 was just 8-21 in championship games from 1979 through 2012.

Individually, Ward Melville wrestler Nick Piccininni had to forfeit a pair of matches at the Suffolk County League I championships due to injury, snapping his winning streak at 169 matches. However, the Oklahoma State-bound senior with a 225-5 career record went on to become the second wrestler in Long Island history to win four NYSPHSAA wrestling championships when he reached the top of the Division I 126-pound podium in Albany.

Hilton sophomore Yianni Diakomihalis nailed down his third straight state crown in the 120-pound class and in the process extended his win streak to 142 matches and his career record to 178-3.

One of the state's longest active losing streaks in any sport came to an end when Guilderland/Mohonasen/Scotia-Glenville beat Shaker/Colonie 3-2 in an overtime hockey contest. Including an 0-7 start to the 2014-'15 season, G/M/SG had been on a 58-game losing streak dating back to the 2011-12 season.

Strange but true in 2014-15
    • Nazareth began the girls basketball postseason with a 6-19 record and ended it with the Federation Class A championship in Albany after defeating Williamsville South 64-54. The combination of a young roster, a tough league (CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens) and a demanding non-league schedule contributed to the Lady Kingsmen's difficulties.
