Middletown to host state soccer: The NYSPHSAA's Executive Committee on Thursday awarded the
boys soccer final fours in 2010-11 to Middletown High School. All five classifications will be contested Nov. 20-21, 2010 at Faller Field (turf), an adjacent grass field and at Twin Towers Middle School.
"It's great news, we are pretty pumped," Middletown AD David Coates told The Times Herald-Record. "We're ecstatic about this. It will be great for the community."
The last nine championship weekends were held in Oneonta at the National Soccer Hall of Fame facility.
Rejected again: The latest requests by the Utica and Rome school districts to move from the Central New York Counties League to the Tri Valley League have been denied by TVL officials.
The schools submitted separate applications in December, and each was notified by the TVL that their requests had been denied primarily because of their size, The Observer-Dispatch reported. Utica Proctor and Rome Free Academy, both Class AA schools, have substantially larger enrollment than the TVL's eight members.
"It was not a surprise, but I was certainly disappointed by the decision,” Rome Superintendent Jeffrey Simons told the paper. "I am saddened by it."
As members of the CNYCL, Proctor and RFA teams travel as far away as Auburn and Oswego for league games. Simons, however, said Rome’s request "wasn’t all about saving money."
"This was an opportunity to reignite a tradition of local rivalries," he said. "It was about strengthening programs."
Extra points: The NYSPHSAA's Executive Committee approved new football enrollment cutoff numbers that we detailed in a blog last week. One of the effects will be a return to a six-game regular season for Section 5's Class AA schools, which will split into two classes for sectionals.
